I walked into the Great Hall grumpily. My hair was tied up into a ponytail, but curls still managed to get loose and fall into my face. I would sigh angrily each time then brush it behind my ear. I walked over to the Hufflepuff table and plopped down. I grouchily fixed up a piece of toast. I didn't even bother to look up when someone sat across from me.
"Hello, Del," they greeted. I looked up to see Melanie smiling at her. I wanted to glare at her. She looked perfect and no one should be this happy in the morning. I just grunted at her, hoping she didn't get the wrong idea. She laughed once she took in my grouchy appearance.
"Hello, Melanie," I greeted before biting into my toast. She smiled and started to fill her own plate up with different food items. "How are you?" I asked in a low voice. She frowned and leaned closer.
"Excuse me?" I groaned internally and cleared my throat to suppress the accent.
"I asked how you were." She raised her eyebrows in realization and nodded understandingly.
"I'm wonderful, and you?" I just grunted again. She giggled. Curse her and her adorable giggle. Curse her for being able to be this happy and look this perfect in the morning. Curse her. "What classes do you have today?" I took out my schedule and looked through it since it was different today.
"Herbology, Muggle Studies, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and History of Magic." She looked a bit surprised.
"Not to be offensive, but don't you already know a lot about Muggles?" I laughed. I had forgotten she was one of the few people who knew I lived in the muggle world. No one knew I lived in an orphanage, however.
"Exactly why I'm taking it. Easy O. Another reason I'm not in Ravenclaw," I said before taking a swig of pumpkin juice. She nodded her head thoughtfully.
"You're lucky, I'm pretty sure all but one of my classes are with Slytherin." I scrunched up my nose.
"Touch luck." Her eyes widened and she pursed her lips.
"Yep. I hate all the boys in Slytherin."
"You're pretty Melanie, what can you expect?" I shrugged. "Not that that justifies anything... They are stupid." She giggled but looked a bit red.
"Really?"
"Yep. You pull your hair up in the morning and look like a goddess, while when I do I look like I just slept off a large amount of drugs." She laughed and I couldn't help but giggle along with her. I continued to eat while Melanie finished up her essay. I saw somebody else sit next to me. I looked to see James looking just as grumpy sitting next to me.
"Bonjour, James," I greeted in a sarcastic tone. He just grunted in response. Melanie laughed and we both looked at her. She blushed and scratched the back of her head awkwardly.
"Sorry, it's just that you two are very much alike."
"That happens when you're not a morning person," I informed her before turning to James again. He looked very tired and a bit angry. "Not enough sleep?"
"Well, no, but that's not why I probably look as bad as I do." He started to pick some food off the table and eating it.
"And what is the reason you look this bad?" He glared at me before sighing.
"Sirius is being an ass."
"Ah, boyfriend troubles?" Melanie looked surprised at looked at James with that expression. James blushed madly.
"He's not my boyfriend!" He attracted the attention from a few people near us. "He's just being Sirius."
"Serious?" I asked.
