Niccolò's Chocolate House

Chapter 25

*Nick*

Before either of us could say another word, a man appeared out of nowhere dressed in a vanilla suit jacket and a pair of black slacks. He approached her with a familiarity that caught me off-guard. By the smile she wore, I reckoned that she recognized him even before my mother linked arms with him.

Another thing that caught me by surprise. I may seem a simple gesture but my mother had never been that affectionate with my sister and I ... not even our father. Rest his soul. He must have been rolling in his grave because despite everything, I knew that he loved her. To see her smile at another man ... a stranger was almost disrespectful in my opinion. However, it was no longer any of my concern since she'd walked out of our lives a long time ago. By the time I caught myself, they'd both disappeared amidst the densely populated venue.

Almost immediately, I wondered who the strange man was and furthermore, why they seemed to be at the banquet together. He looked to be at least around my age, my height, sporting an athletic build, brown shaggy hair, a paled complexioned with dark ravenous eyes.

"Nicky?" Ada asked caressing my cheek affectionately with the palm of her hand. "Are you ok?

"Uh ... yes. Yes I am." I gazed down at her, pleased that she cared enough to ask, especially since she didn't have to. "Dance with me?"

"Always," A contagious smiled spread across her lips causing me to inhale deeply at the sight. It wasn't long before I returned the gesture while leading my wife back out probably for our last dance of the evening. Her warm brown gaze held me captive making me forget my troubles, even if momentarily. How did I get this lucky?

"Are you sure that you're ok?" I could hear the genuine concern in her voice causing me to wonder just how much seeing my mother had actually affected me.

"I am ... as long as you're with me." Nothing could help the smile that spread across my face at that.

"I didn't take my husband for the cheesy type," Ada smiled cocking one of her eyebrows in question.

"What did you take me for?" From the time I asked, I was certain that I shouldn't have.

"The kind that blackmails a woman into marrying you." Damn ... she must still very well be pissed about that and rightfully so. If some guy had done that to my sister, there wouldn't be a law in the land that could've kept me from castrating the idiot. She must have noticed how much her words affected me because she chuckled before kissing my cheek. "Relax Nicky ... it's not a common story, but it's an exciting story to tell I suppose. I don't like cliches anyway but don't you go getting ideas now."

"Too late for that Bella." She laughed and so did I.

By the time we'd made it home, the place was soundless and most of the lights had been turned off. I lead her to the living room where we sat together in the dark on the plush couch basquing in the peace and quiet. I removed her high heels, putting them aside before she leaned against me. Without warning, she stood from her place beside me leaving the room just as I easily drifted to sleep.
