The dull pain in my sides began to become increasingly worse with each stride I took after Sydney. Small beads of sweat began to form on my forehead causing the strands of my semi long, curly brown hair to stick to it as it whipped into my face. Burning from above, the sun refused to give me a break and take refuge behind a cloud for even the slightest of moments. No, instead it beat down on me like there was no tomorrow, so it had to shine its most intense and brightest rays of light today and directly on me.
"Sydney! Wait up would ya?" I managed to gasp out during mid stride.
Sydney's dirty-blonde straightened hair flowed in the wind as she continued to run in a full sprint, slowly gaining more and more distance between the two of us. She glanced over her shoulder and shot me a smirk.
"Try keepin up, Holly, and we wouldn't have this issue would we?!" she yelled back to me before turning her full attention back in front of her.
Before I could respond she had already rounded a corner a good distance away from me. Damn that girl for being so freaken fast and energetic. I took in a deep breath and forced my feet to take me faster, however I hadn't realized that my legs had turned to jelly and wouldn't be able to support anymore strain.
Instantly my leading leg clasped and in a completely ungraceful manner I smacked into the old aged, cracking pavement. My hands had attempted to lighten my fall, taking a lot of the blow themselves. The small jagged parts of old asphalted that littered itself along the road managed to dig deep into my hands and I could already tell that as soon as I pulled them loss a trickle of blood would emerge from each hole.
Letting out a sigh I refused to get up. I lay on the burning hot pavement and took in deep breath after deep breath. Beyond the blistering heat of everything and the horrible pains in my body, this was rather nice. Along both edges of the old abandoned road ran a forest that was always rather peaceful during the day and semi haunting at night if one were alone. And the small breeze that brushed through my now untamed hair rustled through the browning autumn leaves.
Small footsteps from tiny animals roaming about on the grounds of the forested echoed into my ears and the smell of pine trees took over my nose. Nothing quite like laying in the middle of an old beaten down flaming old road in the middle of nowhere with pain bombarding your system from the fall you just took and the jogging you were never good at.
Despite my athletic ability, I could not handle a six mile jog in this heat. I was designed to win games, not to run for no reason. My cardio sucked and would only last when I was determined, and believe you me, I was not determined to run aimlessly down this road. But that was unlike Sydney. Sydney loved to run and would never stop. Stupid perky blonde and her running stamina.
Letting out a heavy sigh, I finally decided to push myself to my feet. That probably wasn't the best idea seeing as the pebbles of rocks were lodged into them and would only get deeper with the extra pressure. Eh, oh well.
Standing up to my full five four height I brushed my hands together to remove the rocks and surely enough trails of blood started to seep from the tiny injuries.
"Great..." I mumbled to myself as I continued to examine them.
I returned my attention to the road ahead of me and decided it was time for me to try and catch up with her-not that that was possible at this point. So I forced my aching legs into action and onward I went. The thud of my footsteps rang through the eerily quiet surroundings. Before it had not sounded so out of place and disturbing, but now something about this place or something just gave me a bad feeling. Then again, I do get paranoid to easy after watching all of those horror movies.
I rounded the corner and came to an instant halt. Before me were three guys lifting something from the ground and into the back of their black SUV. The large object the lifted was hidden under a blue tarp so it was difficult for me to make out what it was.
One of the men lost their footing enough so that they slipped a tiny bit and the tarp ripped loss from part of the object. A gasp escaped before I could prevent it.
Sydney's head hung limply from under the tarp as well as one of her arms. Her crystal blue eyes were hidden by her eyelids and her blonde hair was mixed with a few twigs and a dark red sub-oh my God, blood. Her petite features had small lines of red covering parts of them.
But fate showed me the best sign ever. Her eyes flickered open for the shortest of moments. She was alive.
"There's another one!" one of the men yelled out.
He pointed his beefy finger in my direction and locked his dark cold brown eyes on my lively emerald ones. The other two men jerked their attention to me instantly. Everything in me screamed for my legs to start working overtime and take me away from this, but I couldn't help but keep my eyes locked on her. I couldn't leave her, could I? Leave her to possible die...
Suddenly Sydney's lips started to move. She was weak but I could still make out the word she lipped to me.
Run.
I shook my head back in forth in disbelief that she was telling me to abandon her. She was my closest friend and she just wanted me to leave?! No! I-I couldn't. I wouldn't.
"Run Holly!" somehow Sydney managed to scream out to me.
Her eyes clinched shut as she screamed out her commands and her body seemed to jolt with the new found pain from the strength she exerted to muster those words.
A small tear fall from the corner of my eye as I took a few steps away backwards. Two of the men had left Sydney and the other man who held half of her while the other half was in the SUV. They were running directly for me and making pretty good time.
Without any more debating, my body took over. I jerked around in the other direction and took off in a full sprint. I no longer felt the pain from earlier and I no longer felt the cringe of my heart from the decision to leave her as I ran. All I felt was the adrenaline pulsing through my veins. All I could hear was the pounding of my heart, the pounding of my feet, and their footsteps getting closer and closer to me.
In the distance coming towards me was a car...another car on this abandoned road? Wow, this place was popular today. A twinge of hope found its way into me as I looked upon the car a moment longer. The person in that car could help me. They could help save my life and Sydney's!
It was coming on fast. Extremely fast. It was only a minor fifty yards from me and was still going at least ninety miles per hour. The purr of its engine rang through the surroundings with an untouchable grace to it and the black paint glistened under the beating sun.
If I were smart I would have jumped in the ditch and avoided the car. But I wasn't smart now was I? The car was coming directly for me, but quickly the driver cut the wheels of the car in one direction only a few yards from me, slammed on its breaks, and then cut them the other way. It breezed only inches beside my right side and instantly cut the other direction so that it was perpendicular to the road and sitting at a standstill between me and my chasers.
Everything went silent and I jerked my view around towards the men. The driver's door to the black Ferrari opened up and out stepped a man. His short jet black hair rested messily on his head and he seemed to stand around six foot tall with a nice built to him. His attention was no on me though it was on the men who were perusing me.
"Is there a problem?" he asked casually while leaning back against his car like this was an everyday thing.
The men stared with enraged eyes at the guy. He glanced over his shoulders and looked upon me with his eyes that were hidden behind sunglasses. He had a confident smirk on his lips.
"Get in," he instructed me.
