Chapter 3

430 20 4

A wooden pole connected heavily with my skull forcing me to stumble a few steps backwards.

“Block!” a thickly accented voice yelled at me. “Or at least have the sense to duck!”

A sigh escaped my lips. For the past hour this had been taking place, ever since I had muttered out a rather hesitant yes to Victor’s question. He had beamed a high-wattage smile, grabbed a phone out from the depths of his pocket, and began dialing so quickly his fingers were almost a blur. The upshot was a young woman known as ‘Silence’ turning up on the doorstep a few minutes later, flipping her long black hair over her shoulder and striding in without a word, bringing with her a huge sack which I soon found out was chock-full of weaponry.

Things only went downhill from there.

Tentatively I glanced up at the stick-wielding woman. She was beautiful I’ll give her that. Her glossy hair was nothing short of the color of midnight, and her eyes were a startling shade of blue that verged on purple. She wore plain black clothes that would have made anyone else look stupid just accentuated her shapely figure and added to her beauty. But she was definitely not to be trifled with, especially not while she was holding a large pole that she was currently trying to hit you with. And Victor had explained that she was essentially an assassin- meaning that 'Silence' clearly wasn't her real name- which did nothing to help my trepidation.

“I shall tell you only one more time. I will try to hit you, and you will try not to get hit. I cannot make it simpler.” Silence turned to Victor, who was standing in the corner of the room wearing a rather amused smirk. “Why do you always pick the stupid ones?”

Always, I thought to myself. So I’m not the only one. Then the rest on the sentence sunk in.

“Hey, I’m not stupid. It’s just I’ve never had a mad woman trying to hit me with a plank of wood before.”

Victor snorted with amusement as she raised an eyebrow. “Welcome to my life,” he chuckled.

She ignored him. “Get used to it. Again.”

With a groan, I attempted to raise my very own plank of wood. Her eyes narrowed and she threw her shaft down with a clatter.

“Are you going to take this attitude when a pack of the undead is chasing after you and your only weapon is a wooden baton? Because if so, then this is a waste of my time as you will be dead within a week. And by dead I mean very dead. No walking, no talking, no thinking. So either pay attention or let me alone.” Her face was scribed with passion and her voice was strained.

I felt like I had been scolded by a teacher at school. “I-I’m sorry. I didn’t… I wouldn’t…” I couldn’t find the words to make her believe that I could, I would try harder.

Unbidden, a vision of Sydney arose in my consciousness. She was stood in her bedroom, pretending to belt out some ballad, her face screwed up with concentration. The song came to an end and she grinned at me.

‘I’m gonna be a star!’ she proclaimed jokingly, throwing herself on the bed beside me. ‘Well, no, I’m clearly not. I’m gonna be a runner; that’s my game, that’s what I’m good for.’ Her face and tone suddenly turned serious. ‘But you? Kiddo, you could be anything! Not a runner though- steal my limelight.’ She chuckled. ‘In all seriousness though, you are so kind, so talented at anything if you just put your mind to it.’ She went quiet for a moment. ‘So even when things seem impossible, go for it! I mean, what can go wrong?’ Sydney grinned at me. ‘And with that in mind, let’s go for an insanely long run!’ She grabbed my hand and we ran laughing from the house.

I blinked, and the memory sunk back into the tapestry of my mind. But the feelings it brought didn’t.

“I won’t stop trying even if it kills me.” I spoke with full determination laced into my voice. Victor shifted slightly, and Silence gazed at me with slightly renewed respect.

“In that case, let us continue.” She picked up the shaft again and I did the same, falling into a slightly more prepared stance.

As she lunged towards me, time seemed to slow. I found that I had ample time to swing my pole up and knock hers out of the way. Her eyes lit up with a mixture of surprise and delight, and Victor burst into a spontaneous round of applause. I grinned widely, feeling the best I had since… Earlier.

“Excellent improvement!” Silence was still smiling, her face transformed. “This is how you should be. I can see that you are truly your parent’s daughter.” Her as well?

“You know my parents too?” My voice began to climb the octaves. “Is there anyone who doesn’t know them except me?”

“Of course,” she said. “They are the pinnacle of our organisation. I am-”

A smashing sound interrupted her. As one, we all snapped our heads around to the source of the noise.

“That is coming from the front door, is it not?” Silence murmured to Victor.

He nodded.

“Stay here. As much as I am impressed by your skills, Holly, we are not wanting you dead.”

I agreed with her wholeheartedly.

She pulled a multitude of sharp and harmful objects from her duffel bag, sticking them in various belt loops that covered her outfit. They caught the light as she moved, revealing a myriad of intricate symbols carved onto each item. Finally, she produced a pair of wickedly serrated blades and tried a few experimental swings. Without another word, she ran out of the room.

Victor reached into his coat and came back with an ornately carved flintlock pistol. He grabbed my arm and maneuvered me into a corner behind a large display case containing an ancient suit of armor.

“Stay in that corner and don’t move.” He positioned himself just by the door, out of sight of anyone entering.

Through the slightly open door, a man entered my line of sight. He looked almost completely normal, except his gait was slightly shuffled. Then another man followed, in almost exactly the same fashion. Then a woman, then another man, and then… Well, you get the idea. There were quite a few. Victor risked a quick glance and swore at their increasing numbers.

A different posture caught my eye. It took a moment, but I just saw Silence sneaking up behind them, swords glinting. She glided forward, and cut down three of them before I could even blink. As those three hit the floor, the others realised that something was wrong. They began to turn, but her blade cut them down before they had a chance to see who it was.

Seven people. Dead in the same amount of seconds.

Silence relaxed, and turned towards our room. Victor had moved out from his defensive position. They both stood over the carnage, talking in low voices.

Well, no way was I sitting here like a scared rabbit. Time to find out what the hell just happened. I strode over to them.

“And? What was th-”

They both turned in unison, their faces horrified.

“Holly! Stay back! You can’t-” Victor yelled out, but he was too late.

A pale, freezing cold hand tightly grasped my ankle and violently yanked me from my feet.
