5 years old

"But mom, I don't want to go!"

"That's nice."

"Mom!"

5 year old Charlotte wasn't much for socialising. She preferred her own home, with her own toys and her own company. Besides she had her older brother and sister if she wanted to play with someone else, she didn't need any other friends, especially not a boy.

Simple as that.

But her mother didn't see it like that. She dragged Charlotte along to an old college friend's house. She told Charlotte that she had to come. That eventually she would have to realise home wasn't the only place on the planet.

Try telling that to a 5 year old.

Eventually Charlotte agreed, but she wouldn't talk the whole way there. And when she arrived at the house Charlotte just hid behind her mother.

"Oh it's been ages," Charlottes mother cooed.

"Oh I don't know Jen, for me it feels like just yesterday we were room mates."

"More like 15 years..."

The 2 continued on like this and Charlotte just sat there. Her mother had told her that the woman had a kid her age. Initially she didn't like it, but at that moment she wished she wasn't the only one sitting there. But the kid was nowhere in sight.

"Oh Jen your daughter is so cute. I know she's only 5, so is my Patrick, but time goes by so fast."

"Oh yes, is your Patrick here?"

"He's in his room. He won't come out. Not even when I offered him cookies."

"Oh Charlotte here is just the same."

"I know. Why don't you go up to him, Charlotte."

Charlotte looked up in shock. Go and talk to him? She had heard some stupid things in her short life...but this?

Her mother seemed delighted by the idea and practically shoved her daughter off her seat and down the hallway. The other woman shoved her the rest of the way, to the end of a hallway. She ended up in front of a door.

"Patrick Martin Stumph! Get out here right now!"

"No!"

"Patrick...I'm warning you."

"Ugh, fine."

A few moments later the door opened and a boy about Charlotte's size emerged from the room.

"Who are you?" Charlotte didn't answer.

"Okay, you kids have fun!" Before Charlotte knew what was happening the woman had pushed her into the boy's room and closed the the door behind her.

The two kids stood staring at each other. Neither were sure if they should say something.

"I'm Patrick," the blue eyed boy finally said.

"Charlotte."

"That's a long name. I don't think I'll be able to remember it."

"So?"

"I think I'll call you Charlie," Patrick smiled.

Charlotte smiled too. She liked the name Charlie. Better than Charlotte.

"Okay. Can I call you Pat?"

"No!" Suddenly Patrick's smile vanished.

"Patty!" Charlot- Charlie grinned wider and began to laugh."

"No!"

"I'm calling you Patty."

"No, you're not."

"Yes I am."

"No."

"Fine...Patty."

"I don't like you." But Patrick was laughing now too.

"I don't like you more."

But she did like him and Patrick liked her.
