"I don't even think she knows you!?" Elaine blurted. I already finished my shift and we're headed to the parking lot of the mall.
"Yes, she does... Well, not exactly," I answered and she cocked her brows.
"It's complicated!"
After the stunt Elaine pulled, she got confused when Nique never showed any sign that she knew me, or even acknowledged I was there. She deliberately sat behind Nique just to eavesdrop on them and to watch her reaction when Nique would catch me serving her.
But Nique never did. When I served Elaine's order, she just seemed indifferent – oblivious towards everything around her besides the paper she was reading and never once raised her head (as I expected).
By the time we reached the car and got in, Elaine immediately turned towards me with beaming eyes, indicating I have to tell her everything. When I did, I immediately regretted it.
"She called you a scum!" she guffawed.
"A scum!" she yelled again, now laughing louder while hitting the dashboard.
"Yeah, yeah," I chorused in defeat. But I could never get annoyed with her.
"You don't have to laugh that hard," I sighed. But she still laughed even louder – if that was even possible, with her hand on her stomach.
"You ..." she started under her breath.
"You're a boy ... next ... door ..." she choked with every word as her laughter died down.
"Without a twist!" she cried as she held her head up in another set of laughter. I couldn't help but to grin at her reaction.
"What does that even mean!?" she choked – now she started stomping her feet when she couldn't stop herself from laughing. Shaking my head, I let her continue to laugh it off and wait for her to calm down.
"Oh man ..." she breathed, her laughter coming to a halt.
"I like her," she declared, her laughter now subsiding.
"I mean, she's the first one to ever call you names. After me of course," she stated – the last part with pride.
"I didn't even think that could be possible." She smiled in satisfaction.
"Yeah, well. There's always a first for everything," I said.
After moments of silence, Elaine's smile suddenly changed to dread.
"You're not doing this just because of that, now are you?" she gasped.
I turned to look at her – her brows arched as she waited for my reply.
"What?" I asked stupidly.
"I know you. You can be pretty stubborn and egoistic sometimes. Remember Shelly?" she said referring to an ex-girlfriend back in high school whom I got pretty serious with. But we broke up after I caught her kissing with Brett – the captain of the baseball team.
"What does she have to do with anything?" I asked – I didn't like talking about her.
"Of course she does!" she blurted.
"After you broke up with Shelly because of what she did, you practically stole every girl Brett got involved with just to get back at him," she explained and hit me in the arm.
"I mean, every GIRL!" she said emphasizing on the word and continued to hit me with both hands just to make me listen.
"That just shows how stubborn and egoistic you can be."
"Okay, okay!" I said just to make her stop hitting me.
"And narrow – minded if you ask me," she added crossing her arms.
"How do you even know about these things? Geez!" I breathed.
"I'm your sister," she said – like that explained everything, with pride.
"And?" she said after a moment.
"And what?" I asked back.
"Am I right?" she asked, beaming at me again.
When will she ever stop being too nosy?
"I bet it is," she answered for me before I could respond.
"I bet you're just trying to win her because of what she did, about how she called you a scum. And since she's the first one who ever rejected you so strongly ..." she continued. I just stayed silent the whole time she spoke and tried to consider everything she said. Well, she isn't my sister just for nothing. She really does know me better than I do.
"Wha – what?" I gasped, taking my eyes off the road for a moment after Elaine drew her face near mine wearing a mischievous smile on her face.
"Kiss her," she mumbled.
"What!?" I blurted, dumbfounded that she even suggested it, making me lose control of the wheels for a second.
"I mean, I know you're a good kisser and ... ," she declared waving her hands in the air as she sat back down beside me.
"Where did you even get that -" I blurted but she wasn't listening and continued her nonsense.
"... that's the fastest way to capture a woman's attention. And it's quite romantic too, don't you think?" she said dreamily.
I just gaped at her for a moment.
"You're delusional," I joked shaking my head.
"Every girl dreams to be kissed when they least expect it, you know! It's more romantic that way," she defended.
"I know I do."
I chuckled at her fantasies. Now I know why until now, she never had a boyfriend.
Elaine continued her prattle about what I should do to get Nique's attention. But throughout the drive home, there was only one thing that kept going round my head when I remembered that Nique once called me a "pervert".
A little smile formed across my face when I considered what Elaine suggested.
And I never thought I would get impatient just waiting for tomorrow to come.
