It looked like a pretty normal classroom, apart from the scorch marks on the walls, ten legged frog in a jar, and machine gun hanging above the blackboard. At the front stood Phoenix, who I then realized must be Day, doing the register. When we walked in, she simply rolled her eyes and gestured to two empty seats. On the blackboard was the title Types of Being; mental, physical, ultimate.
"Morning class, late comers, newbie. Today we will be learning the classes of Being, mainly because of the fights between certain children over what type they are," she glared at two bruised boys on the front row, "Beings go by many names, and have many, many inaccurate movies made about them. We are mutants, freaks and lots of other things. The most common Being is a physical. Physical powers are something visible, or to do with the body. An example would be Jonny or my brother Seth. Mental powers are something controlled from the mind, they are extremely rare though. Mental would be Lotus or Kate. Finally, ultimates. Ultimate powers are complete control over something," as she said it, her hand burst into flames,"But do not be fooled by the name, they are not the most powerful, in fact, all powers have equal strengths and weaknesses. Though, we do worry more about ultimates as they find it harder to control themselves."The rest of the lesson was spent scribbling stuff down into books (I used a page Sky had ripped out her book).
Once the bell went again, everyone milled out the classroom and to their final lesson. Apparently they only had two lessons a day, five days a week; so cool! I followed Sky to her next lesson, which she called VCU but I had no idea what it stood for. We headed out into the garden, which was much bigger than I had first realized. Kids as young as two played on the swings and in the sand pit; others dove into a huge swimming pool. I suppose stealing diamonds really paid off. Most kids were gathered round an area right at the back, though, where the floor was covered in mats.
At the front of the crowd was Phantom -who's real name was Alexi- fighting Sam. He sent vines and thorns flying out the ground at her, but they turned to gloop at her touch. He pulled out a long dagger just as she brought out a samurai sword, and both charged. It was a blur of blades, no one could tell who was winning. Suddenly, poppies burst out of the ground around Alexi and Sam charged once more. The poppies were making her dizzy and tired, you could see it in her sluggish motions. The poppies disappeared and all that remained was Sam with his knife against her throat. The class clapped and he bowed as though he had just performed.
"Well done, brother. Poppies. That's a new trick, I suppose? Bravo. Who would like to fight me next?"
While everyone called out and waved their hands in the air, I turned to Sky, "What is this?"
"VCU; villain combat for ultimates. Duh!"
"What about you, Sky? I haven't fought you in a while. Come on up here," called Alexi.Grudgingly, Sky walked up after her and braced for impact. That's when it got weird. As Alexi charged at her, samurai sword at the ready, Sky simply spat out her retainers. I cringed, but no one else seemed disgusted. In fact, they all backed away slightly, staring at the retainers like they were from out of space. Suddenly, the retainers started growing and bubbling until they formed two red slimy warriors with wire daggers. They charged while Sky then pulled out a pack of gum and watched. It was two against one, and the slimy men were winning. Then, Sky spat out the gum she was chewing, and I knew what to expect. The gum quickly transformed into a pure white, spearmint tiger, that also joined the fight. The fight was a slimy, minty fresh throw down, and at the end the warriors turned back to retainers and the tiger to gum at the click of Sky's fingers.
"Nice job, Sky. That was disgusting but pretty awesome!"Alexi had just called up another kid to fight when a deafening boom shook the ground. Screams came from inside the house. Fear overtook everything. The others were turned to each other. Some were in hysterics. Whispers weaved their way through the crowds; 'they've come for us', 'I can't go back to the freak show!', 'Wires. So many wires'. Alexi was running to the house and jumped, before scrambling up the wall and through an open window.
"Come on!" I heard Sky shout to me and we too ran. She tugged on the black door, "It's locked!"
"I've got an idea," I raised my hands, and we began floating slowly up. It was harder to control outside; any minute we could go flying into outer space. But I held on, and only let go once we had both clambered inside.
"Hey, we're in my dorm!" She walked over to a bright yellow section with a vending machine at the back. Over the neon bed was a picture of a little girl with short red hair, stroking a baby elephant made entirely out of... Crayons?! I looked to her for an explanation but she bushed furiously and reminded me that we didn't have time for that, dragging me out the room.We found the commotion. And the commotion was just plain weird. Alexi and Day stood on a balcony I hadn't noticed before overlooking the street outside. With them were my roommates, Antoinette, Heloise, and another guy I didn't recognize. They were all shouting down at a group of very grumpy men on the road. All except the middle man had guns and military uniforms with a weird diamond symbol on the front. The man in the middle was obviously in charge with a rich purple velvet suit and beret to hide his balding black hair. He was quite large, reminding me of a walrus in many ways.
"GIVE ME BACK MA DAUGHTERS, YOU DESPICABLE SIRENS!" cried the man in a heavy French accent.
"Ummmm," Alexi and Day looked at each other, "Nope." They turned away from the crowd, when a large gunshot went off, followed by another, louder than the first. In the French man's hands was a smoldering gun, melting like silvery chocolate on a summers day.
"HA, SUCKERS! DON'T EVER TRY TO KILL THE CLOSEST THING I HAVE TO A MOTHER!" Hanging out the window above us was TNT, his black hair swept over neon green eyes, his fingers glowing black.
"I'm so touched, Taylor! Care to dance with your dear old mummy?" called Day. TNT climbed out the window and jumped down next to us, landing superhero style. He bowed and held out his hand, which Day took, and together they jumped straight off the balcony.
