"Merry Christmas" I wish to the couple once I hand them their order."Merry Christmas to you too" the girl cheerfully replies before they leave the café. I have a jam-packed morning shift at the café. It's already Christmas and I couldn't be happier. School ended a few days ago and since then I have been working my ass off to help Meghan host the most wonderful Christmas party in town.
The winter dance ended on a sort of bitter tone but the bright side of it was, none of the twins ever suspected me going out of the house and I let them believe that. Since then Meghan has been in full boss mode, decorating the mansion in shades of green and red. She has called several families of businessmen and women to celebrate the occasion and basically, look for ways to expand her own empire. She holds a grand party every year and I, unfortunately, have to help her set it up.
Today morning a bunch of us who work in the café came earlier than usual and set the Christmas decorations. We have set up a tree on one side of the café adorned with fairy lights and Santa Claus figurines. There are green and red streamers decorating the ceiling and we have hired a high school student to dress up as Santa Claus and hold a board advertising at the entrance of the café. Due to Christmas, the café is packed with people who seek shelter from the pitter-pattering snow outside. The whole town is already covered in a blanket of snow and it looks beautiful. I have to work at the café till afternoon and then help Meghan for last minute decorations until the party starts in the evening. And then I'm free. Meghan wants me out of the house so that I don't spoil anything and like every year I spend the Christmas evening with Adeline's family. I look forward to this dinner every year because it finally feels like home. Her family is very supportive of me and don't mind me coming there every year.
This year though the celebration at Adeline's house is a little different. After the traditional dinner, Adeline has invited a bunch of close friends to come over to celebrate. I can't wait for my shift to get over!

It is almost seven when I am helping Meghan with last minute fixing before the party starts.
"Ellie, go check if the security guards have finally come" Meghan orders and I do as told. Meghan has actually hired guards to check if the families entering have an invitation or not. God! She is impossible.
"Ellie you can leave from the back door. The last thing I want is for everyone to ask about you" Meghan tells me and I nod happily. I go to my room and slip into a black dress and am just about to leave when I get a text from Daniel.
Daniel: Hey!
I am surprised. The last message I got from him was seven days ago. It was a simple how was your exam kind of text.
Me: Hey, did you need something?
Daniel: Why do you have to be so rude?
Me: I was just asking. I am leaving for Adeline's house right now so I'm in a bit of a hurry.
Daniel: What are you doing at that nerd's house?
Me: What the fuck Daniel? That's my best friend you're talking about.
Daniel: Whatever. Can you come over?
Me: I just told you that I am going to Adeline's place.
The phone rings and I see that he is calling. I pick the phone with a moment of hesitation.
"Hey!" I greet him. He only grunts at me in response.
