"Alec, I can't see where I'm going. I'll probably trip" I tell him as he adamantly refuses to let me remove the blindfold hindering my sight. His so called surprise makes me regret ever agreeing to it in the first place. He literally drove me after school for about fifteen to twenty minutes and now we've walked for another five all the while with a stupid bandana over my eyes.
"I'll catch you if you fall" he promises and again, his stupid words affect in a way they shouldn't.
His hand touches my lower back to guide me over a branch and sends my already racing heart into an overdrive. "Careful there" he whispers, his breath spreading goosebumps over my nape.
"You crazy asshole" I curse at him to stop the fluttering beats of my heart.
"Just a little while" he reassures for the umpteenth time and his breath once again races my stupid naïve heart.
"Stop whispering in my ear like a creep, you moron," I tell him to distance myself. The farther the better.
Because once I read, distances make goodbyes easier.
"Surprise!" everyone yells the moment Alec leads me through a door and I pull open the black cloth and gasp in joy.
All my friends spring up from below the chairs and behind the tables and yell surprise. The little wooden cottage in the greener areas of the country is decorated with handicrafts and poppers of confetti to bid a farewell.
"Did Adeline get here, yet?" Alec asks Willow as she walks in front offering alcohol for a toast.
"She should be here anytime," Alissa tells glancing at her watch.
And before we can wonder more about her late arrival, the door bursts open and walks in Chris with a blindfolded Adeline. Everyone crouches back to their position and scream surprise all over again scaring the anxious girl.
"God! You scared me!" she remarks placing her hand on her heart to calm herself.
Willow walks forward and offers a drink to Chris and hands Adeline a can of carbonated apple juice. And before I can even coo at the fact that Chris was the one that actually led Adeline to the surprise, Alissa calls out for a celebration, "To both these sisters that have decided to ditch us before prom."
And the group bursts into laughter.
The music plays and everybody scatters. Red solo cups are passed around and the food is served outside on tables. Confetti celebrates the occasion and people chill around the bonfire outside playing an immature game of cards.
"Wow! Did you see any of this coming?" Adeline asks me excitedly as she takes in all the surroundings from the banner on the wall printed, 'Goodbye losers' to the fake graduation caps splattered across the tables.
Not deciding to answer her I say, "So Chris, huh?"
"Shut up Ellie" she shushes me up with obviously a blush, "You know it's the last time we're seeing all these people"
"I know," I tell her in regret and with a complaint in my heart about the fickle nature of time.
"So, how did Meghan react to the news?" she asks me and almost braces herself for the disaster.
"It wasn't pretty" I sum up for her and she gives me a weak smile. Before I can launch into the whole story, Chris interrupts us, "Adeline, c'mon over. I've got to show you something."
"Sorry I'm gonna steal your best friend away for a while," he tells me and I smile in encouragement at him. Without Adeline's opinion, he whisks her away.
