I was jolted awake, my face pressed to a hard surface, I sat up and looked around. I had rolled off of the bed, and I was on the floor. I yawned and stretched, getting up. I decided to take it easy for a bit, try to escape when I was stronger. Or when I earned his trust. Maybe that was the key. I could earn his trust and escape.
Nah, I'll just try some other time. I walked across the room and into the hall, down the stairs, and to the living room. I stretched out on the couch and laid back, closing my eyes. Maybe I could sleep better here, last night I kept twisting and turning, and I would wake up shouting about nothing. I turned on my side and dozed off, hoping for sleep. Minutes later my legs were roughly shoved aside. I opened my eyes and glared at Toby as he smirked. I got up and walked into the kitchen. He followed me in there, so I turned and walked into a part of the house I had never been in. The dining room.
It was extravagant, with a chandelier and a long table. It was wide too, made of sturdy cherry wood. I kept going, knowing he was behind me. I jogged further on, into a library. I weaved between shelves, turning down wiles and going up stairs. The place was so huge I could get lost in here. I was trying to, to lose Toby.
I turned down countless rows of shelves, turning left and right, going up and down stairs. I came to a stop in an old section, covered in dust. I figured I had lost him by now. I began to look at the books, written in an ancient language only creatures lie angels and demons could read. They were about wars, passion, tragedy, and hate. One book caught my eye, it was brown leather, and when I blew the dust off of it I could read the title.
'The Documentary' is what it said. I was curious, so I picked it up and flipped to the first chapter.
"What do you think you're doing?" Toby's voice said.
I quickly put the book back and looked over at him. He was standing so close I was surprised I hadn't noticed him sooner. But he was just like that, here one moment and gone the next. I'll have to ask him about that. I just rolled my eyes and jogged away from him, making tons of sharp turns. I made a right and he was there on a shelf, looking at his nails.
"Are you done running yet?" he asked.
I turned and ran in the opposite direction, but he was around the next left. This time he was on the floor, his hands in his pockets.
"I'm getting really bored with this," he complained.
I turned to run again, but right around the corner my lips met his as he hung upside down from the ceiling. I pulled back and tried to run again, but I tripped over my own feet. He chuckled as I got up, running again. I jumped over the rails and landed on top of a bookcase, kicking off and running into a different room. This one was made of concrete with furniture covered in plastic. There was no other way out of there. I turned to leave, but he was right behind me.
"Good, you're finally done," he said, smirking.
I tried to push my way past him, but he blocked my way. I frowned and tried to slip through, but he blocked me again. I shoved him and left, walking across the library floor. I turned right and entered a new room, huge and extravagant. It was gold, with arches and chandeliers. The whole room seemed to glow. It must be the ballroom. There was no furniture in it, except for the barstools at the bar. The ceiling was a glass dome, the sun shining through.
The patterns in the glass danced on the floor, waltzing to their own symphony. I stared at them, caught up in the beauty of the room. I shook my head and walked to the other side of the room. His mansion was pretty cool, but I still wanted to get away. As pretty as it may be, the owner is cruel. I stepped into the main room, back where I started. I sighed and walked up the stairs. I strode into my room, slamming the door behind me. I collapsed on my bed in a huff, looking at my amulet. I looked through the information on Toby. It said he was like any other demon. Lie.
There was a soft knock on my door as the redhead maid walked in.
"The master would like for you to meet with him by the pool to swim," she recited quietly.
"Well you can tell your master he can kiss my ass if he thinks I'm going in there," I snapped.
Her eyes widened in fear, and I sighed. I couldn't let him do anything to her, so I snapped my fingers, changing into a gold bikini. I walked out of the room, grabbing a towel and frowned as I got closer to the pool. I knew he would try to pull a move, but there was no way that would happen. I opened the door and set my towel on the table that was there. His hands gripped my shoulders, his breath rolling down my neck.
"So, you came," he said.
I nodded without turning, pretending to be busy. He chuckled.
"I guess you couldn't wait for the chance to see me naked," he teased.
I snapped my fingers, putting swimming trunks on him. I turned and narrowed my eyes.
"I came to swim, not to be hit on by some perv. And keep the clothes on, I'd rather not know what's underneath," I said, disgusted.
I pushed past him and to the deep end of the pool. I dove in, slipping through the water like a fish. I swam down and touched the bottom, opening my eyes to look around. This didn't feel as good as swimming in holy water, but it was better than nothing. There was a rush of bubbles as Toby did a cannon ball, joining me at the bottom. Even in the water he smirked. I swam back up to the surface, breathing in a gasp of air and moving away from him. I grabbed the edge of the pool and pulled myself out, standing up. Toby surfaced and frowned.
"Don't tell me you're leaving," he complained.
I just shook my head and backed up to get a running start. I ran and jumped right over him, flipping and diving into the pool. Toby went under, grabbing my ankle and pulling me closer, but I slid out of his grasp. I sat on the bottom, looking up at the ceiling. I took my amulet out and flipped through my past clients. All of them were a success, but I was never going to get Toby.
I would be stuck here forever. Not like the house was all that bad, I just didn't like the man who lived in it. Maybe I could just hide from him. Yeah, that could work. I deactivated my amulet and swam up to the surface, leaning back against the edge. Toby swam closer, so I moved away. He kept trying to get closer, and I kept moving, until we were swimming laps around the pool. I dove under, turning back around and swimming under him. I surfaced and began to swim in the opposite direction, smiling.
"No fair," he whined.
"Is not my fault you're slow," I teased.
There was a whoosh of water, and suddenly he was behind me.
"Whoever said I was slow?" he asked.
"I did," I answer, taking off at full speed.
I swam faster than him, diving under and switching directions every once in a while. He may be fast, but I was faster. I dove under to switch again, but Toby caught me by my waist and hoisted me up to the surface. He smiled in triumph and set me on the edge.
"Gotcha," he said.
I shook my head as he put his arm behind my head, pulling me towards him. I set my hands on his shoulders with a grip of iron, pushing away. Slowly, we came to a standstill. I began to slightly move towards him again, but I spread my wings and beat the air with them, tearing myself from his grasp. I walked over to grab my towel, but he stopped me. He tried to force himself upon me again, but I rejected him. He frowned.
"Fine, if you wanna play dirty, I can play dirty. Maid," he called.
The redhead stepped I to the room, avoiding eye contact.
"Yes master?" she asked quietly.
"Did you make the tea I asked for?" he questioned.
"I was never told to make tea," she said, fright making her sound even smaller.
He whipped out his tail, forcing his horns to grow.
"Don't you dare question your master!" he roared at her.
"Fine! I'll do it, just let her go," I snapped.
He smiled triumphantly and withdrew his tail. He dismissed the maid and turned towards me, chuckling. I fiercely grabbed his crotch and threw him back into the pool. I darted out into the hall, rushing through the house. I spread my wings and flew as fast as I could into the library, going up five levels before landing. I took twists and turns, finally resting behind a shelf. I changed into my gear and slipped my boots off, making sure I could walk along on silent feet. I was completely quiet, trying to slow my pounding heart.
I silently crawled to the railing to see if he was here yet. I suddenly remembered Klaus uploading a new tool into my amulet. I quickly flicked on a cloaking device, scolding myself for not using it earlier. Toby walked into the room, fuming. I watched as he scanned each floor, my breath hitching as his gaze looked over the level I was on.
We made eye contact for a brief moment, but he didn't see me. I sighed a breath of relief and walked down the stairs as he walked up. I made sure not to make a sound or movement as he passed. He gave no indication that he had noticed me, and I rushed out of the room and to the front door. I walked past the maid out front and flew into the woods as fast as I could. When I thought I had enough distance between myself and the mansion I stopped, pulling out my amulet and contacting Klaus. His stressed face showed up, his forehead crinkled.
"Yes Kailynne?" he asked.
"I can't do this. Give me another assignment. This is a demon, not a human. It's impossible!" I demanded.
"Either complete the mission or become a fallen angel," he reminded me.
"This is a suicide mission! He's hopeless," I hissed.
"Just complete the mission, and you can come home. Goodbye, Kailynne," he ordered.
He hung up and I growled in frustration, punching the tree. I removed my fist from the bark, leaving a three inch dent in the tree. I sat at the base of the tree and thought. This mission is impossible. I can give up, and become a fallen angel. I could have Toby lie, but then I'd become a fallen angel for lying about curing an assignment if he did something bad. Either way I'm screwed. Why was Klaus so stubborn? I sighed and got up, walking back to the mansion. I stomped inside and dragged my feet up the stairs. Toby was in my room, pacing. I clicked off my cloaking device and cleared my throat. Well, I'm gonna get beat again, that's for sure.
His head whipped around and hissed, moving in front of me. He gripped my arm, his eyes boring into mine. He threw me against the wall.
"Don't ever do that again," he seethed.
"In case you haven't noticed, I'm not one of your succubi. All you want from me is sex, and you can go get that from your whore Lucile," I spat.
He was over to me in seconds, his hand gripping my jaw. He pressed my head back against the wall, pinning my hands by my sides. His eyes were glowing red, so he was really mad.
"Listen to me, you brat. You either apologize or do whatever one thing I want. Now choose carefully," he said dangerously quietly.
"I'll never apologize," I snapped.
"I was kind of hoping you'd say that," he said gruffly.
I instantly regretted my decision. Darn my pride. I was roughly dragged over to the playroom, forced on the bed, and kissed hard on the lips. He pulled back.
"My one thing is that you have sex with me," he ordered.
"I'd rather apologize," I said.
"Go ahead, I'm all ears,"he said sarcastically.
Okay, you can do this.
"I'm so-orry," I forced myself to say.
"For?" he asked.
I glared up at him.
"For ru-unn-ning away," I choked out.
Gosh, this was hard. I got up and left the room. I literally had to force myself to do that. Well, better than banging a demon. I strode into my room and sat down at my desk. I sighed and thunked my head down, but sat back up. There was an envelope on my desk. I opened it and looked inside. I took out a picture and gasped, watching it poof to ashes.
I had gotten my cupid.
