I stared at him blankly, trying to sort out what he just said. It had to be a lie. There was no way it was true, it just had to be a lie. Didn't it? He was a demon, after all. Still though, I had to be certain.

"How would you know?" I managed to ask.

"I contacted Cupid while you were gone and asked him about it. He told me to make it even more fun," he said, humor flashing in his eyes.

I wanted to strangle him and beat his head against the wall, but I held myself in check. No, I needed to be patient, calm, cool and collective. I wouldn't let him get to me, not today. I forced a smile, and doing only that was tough. Forcing sweetness into my voice was even rougher.

"Did you now? We'll see about that," I said, letting some of my annoyance slip into my tone.

I grabbed my amulet and opened the contacts, searching through. I selected Cupid and waited. Its glow dimmed for a second, meaning it was patching me through. Suddenly Cupid appeared, dimples and all. His hair was perfect, his blue eyes twinkles and his cheeks were slightly chubby, like that of a child. His appearance changed slightly, making him look more mature. He filed his nails and raised an eyebrow at me.

"Yes hon?" he asked, bored.

"Is it true you told Toby who my match is?" I demanded.

"Sure did hon, and you bet I won't tell you. You have to figure it out on your own," he replied smoothly.

"How come Toby gets to know? It's not fair!" I protested.

"Ah, but since when was love ever fair? Whoever made that silly old saying, 'All is fair in love and war', was a real nut job. Nothing is ever fair sweetie. Now can we hurry up? I have a meeting with another client here shortly, and I would hate to miss it. Face it, I did it to make things interesting. Goodbye hon," he explained.

"Wait!" I shouted, but he had already disconnected me.

I grumbled and out my amulet back in its place. I folded my arms and gave Toby a death look. He sat there smirking, ignoring my angered look. I huffed and stood up, walking to the exit. In a flash Toby was up, gripping my arm.

"Where do you think you're going?" he hissed.

"Whatever happened to being nice?" I snapped back.

He held my gaze for a long moment before letting go of my arm and taking a step back. I rubbed my arm and fixed my dress.

"I'm going back to the mansion. I'm tired and I want to sleep," I said.

"I'll drive you back," Toby offered.

He took me by the arm and led me out of the restaurant. He took me to his parked car, opening the passenger side door for me. I grudgingly got in, shutting the door while Toby walked around to the other side. He got in and started the car, the engine purring to life. He put it in drive and glided out of the parking lot.

I kept my gaze focused on the window, refusing to look at him. I figured he was staring at me, but a quick glance in the mirror showed me otherwise. He was clearly focused on the road ahead of him, not even glancing at me. It was odd, especially for him. I shrugged and looked at a couple stepping out of an ice cream shop as we passed.

I wanted to be able to do that with someone, to hold their hand and feel safe, but I couldn't do that until Toby told me who my match was. That wouldn't happen unless I kissed him, but I wasn't going to do that. Most of me hated the thought, but part of me thought otherwise. If he told me who my match was, I would be free. All I had to do was kiss him. It was just a little kiss, what was the harm?
