Hey, how about a late Mothers Day one shot? I was originally going to delete it, but due to a couple people requesting to keep it, I think I will!

Mothers Day.

This is the worst time of the year for Kevin.

Why?

Because he had to watch dozens of people taking their mother's out for dinner or buying them flowers and cards. And while everyone else had a mom to be with today, Kevin's mother is gone.  He has no one to praise; no one to shower in love and gifts.

This thought gave Kevin the unwavering feeling of depression. He doesn't get out of bed, deciding that he'll just get up later, and he doesn't eat, deciding that he doesn't have to. He's exhausted and empty.

When his phone rings, he sighs. He doesn't feel like dealing with people; doesn't feel like listening and trying to form sentences. He wants to ignore the call, but his annoying ringtone is pounding in his ear. At the fifth ring, he grabs his phone off the bedside table with the intention to hang up on whomever was calling,

But then he saw the caller I.D.

His breath caught in his throat and he answered the call.

"Good morning, Kevin," Edd said into the phone.

"Hey," Kevin says, trying to sound like he felt something.

"Mind if I come over?" Edd asked.

"Sure."

Edd was over in a matter of minutes, walking into Kevin's bedroom.  It didn't make Kevin feel better seeing Edd dressed and ready for the day, no matter how desperately he wanted it to.

"Hey," Edd said. "How are you?"

Kevin had managed to sit up, but didn't clean the clothes and papers that were strewn across his room from last night in his furious (or maybe jealous?) stupor.

"Fine," Kevin said. "You?"

"I'm well."

Edd takes the satchelt off his shoulder and sits on the side of Kevin's bed. Kevin, silently appreciating the fact that Edd didn't turn on the lights when he came in, leans his head against his headboard and closes his eyes.

"I... I brought something for you," Edd says nervously.

Kevin opens one eye and hums. Edd presents in front of him a small gift.

Kevin takes it with one hand and stares at it for a second before peeling the paper carelessly to uncover a small black box. He opens the box to a simple metal band.

"It's a ring," Edd declares. "It's not worth much, but..."

"What for?"

"It is for you to wear. It's... well, it's a promise ring."

Kevin doesn't say anything as he folds the ring in his hand.

"Why?"

"Because I love you," Edd says, smiling. "And I give this ring to you to show my appreciation for you." Edd takes a ring similar to Kevin's out of his pocket and puts it on his right ring finger. "So long as we bear this ring, we promise to never let go of each other."

Kevin looks at Edd, then down at his own ring. He slips it onto the same finger as Edd and surveys it. The ring is plain silver with a barely noticeable heart engraved in it.

"How gay," Kevin says, trying to laugh. The laugh, though, sounded m much more like a whimper.

"I know that Mothers Day is hard without your mother, Kevin," Edd says quietly; calmly. "I understand."

"What, do you expect me to cry about it?" Kevin snaps.  He took a deep breath, wanting to apologize, but not doing so.

"It's okay to cry."

"I don't need to cry," Kevin huffs. "I don't always need to cry about my mom."

Edd doesn't say anything, and neither does Kevin until the silence finally breaks him.

"It's been four years and it's still so fucking hard. Four years of this bullshit mourning. Four years of Mothers Day's spent in bed feeling... I don't know, empty."

Kevin's voice shudders but he still continues.

"I don't know why it's still affecting me. I don't want to feel like this every time I see a kid with their mom or a picture of her. I don't want to feel hollow every Mothers Day."

Edd looks at Kevin and wraps his arm around his shoulder, unsure of what to say. So he just stays silent.

"I'm sick of fucking remembering her," Kevin utters as tears trickle down his face.

Edd takes Kevin in his arms and hugs him, allowing Kevin to feel warm and safe. Eventually, his tears and sadness were wiped away by Edd.

At exactly 1:17 p.m, Kevin and Edd fell asleep together, holding eachother close under the blankets of Kevin's bed.

This wasn't Kevin's best Mothers Day, but it definitely wasn't the worst.
