Chapter 13: Music
Shayla's POV:
He emerged from the door, turning on the lights. My heart skipped a beat seeing who it was.
Flashback:
I screamed. He was coming for me. He was coming for me.
My parents were outside, hiding the other children. Cole and I were stuck in this room. Being only ten years old, we didn't know what to do. We were defenseless. I clutched my star-iron dagger tightly. It was our only hope.
We heard his snarls outside my bedroom door, and the sound of the hinges breaking off. I whimpered as my brother pulled me closer. He was walking towards our door now. I buried my head into Cole's chest, waiting for the worst to come. I was having trouble breathing in the wardrobe; did I have asthma?
Then we heard it. The wolf crashed into the room and my breath hitched. I looked into Cole's eyes, which I was sure would be the very last time I would be able to do so. 'I love you,' I mouthed. He gave me a sad smile, 'I love you too,' he mouthed back.
We heard the wolf growl hungrily, rummaging through Cole's room for blood. How he was the spawn of both werewolf and vampire remains a mystery. All we knew was that this powerful hybrid who - before he grew his fangs - was one of my friends, and is now sucking up the blood of our pack members, a few everyday.
We heard his hungry growls outside the door. I quickly opened it, taking out my sharp star-iron dagger with me, making a large cut along his face. He howled in pain, his dull brown fur now soaked in blood. His teeth clenched in fury, he advanced towards me. I trembled in fear, my teeth chattering. I saw Cole had not moved from his hiding spot and was rolled up in a ball behind several wooly jumpers.
I stumbled back as the bloody muzzle advanced towards me. "Gaston?" I whispered, hoping my friend would come back to me. No luck.
Ever so slowly, the back of my hand touched the wall. I was cornered. I closed my eyes, prepared to be killed.
"Stay there Shayla, I'm coming," Chase's familiar voice rang in my head. I couldn't respond. The fear for losing my life was taking over me. He's only twelve! Why would he risk coming to save me? Stupid and egotistical.
Gaston's teeth grazed against my cheek. What has this hybrid done to the Gaston I once knew?
-End of Flashback-
He walked towards my cage. It's been six years, yet I still recognized him.
'Pretend to be weak,' my wolf told me.
I silently obeyed and tried to hide myself in the darkest corner of the cage. He silently cackles - literally - as he reaches to the bars of my cage.
"Shayla, still so young and naive," he says, "So? The mate of Chase Anderson, huh? Too bad you're mine."
I slowly emerged from the darkness and looked up to him, making sure my eyes were open wide and clear enough for him to know I have golden eyes. His eyes hidden under the layers of long shaggy brown hair widened in surprise.
"Still weak and naive, aren't I? I'm a fighter, not a pampered lap dog," I snarled.
He growled at me, fangs longer than I remembered.
-Flashback-
I felt a bead of sweat fall onto the floor. He extends his fangs, placing them on my neck. I rapidly search for my dagger, only to find it out of my arm's reach.
