Chapter five

{Jordan}

I feel a wave of anger and jealousy run through my body as Hayes helps Libby up from the ground. I'm so glad that she is alright, but I don't think I'm completely over him yet. Moving schools must've not helped any and I realize that I do not have a chance with him, not even close. But I soon pull it together as I watch him walk over to me with a smile spread across his face.

"Hey," he starts as he takes a few more steps and stops in front of me, "you're okay... right?"

"Y-yeah, I'm fine." I stammer while he nods and still shows his smile.

"Good."

As he walks away I figure I should say something, something to keep the conversation going.

"What about you?" I question which makes him turn back around, but still farther away than he was before.

"Pretty good," he states and slightly laughs, "a few scratches here and there, it's nothing that bothers me."

Of course I want to say, "Because you're so brave and strong." but I figure it's not the best thing to do. All that comes out of me is a laugh, and probably too dramatic of one. And nothing was even funny.

He just stands there and smiles awkwardly at me while I'm over here laughing like a fool over something that wasn't even humorous. Could this honestly have gotten any worse?

"I'll- um, I'll see you later." Hayes concluded and ran off to Libby and Shawn.

I am absolutely mortified as he leaves, and I wish I wouldn't have tried to get involved again in the first place. It's hard to convince myself not to, even when it blows up in my face.

-

{Libby}

"Hey Lidd-" Hayes sighs and slightly chuckles before he finishes, "Libby."

"Hey." I smile up at him. "Still can't get my name right huh?"

"Seems that way," he admitted, "I'll get it don't worry."

I smile and nod, hoping that he will eventually. I'm not so sure how I feel about this whole thing, I mean he's over my house. Our only conversation was yesterday. And Jordan. I don't want her feeling weird about this but, hopefully she doesn't make herself look desperate because it's happened before.

"Look," he gets my attention, "I should probably get going. I only live a couple blocks down so I can walk. But, hopefully I'll see you soon."

I smile at him and he rubs his hand across the back of his neck.

"Yeah, I'll see you."

As he starts turning to say bye to the others, I feel a sudden brush on my arm.

"Did Shawn say anything? Like, about me?" Hayes fretted and looked down in a hurry.

"No," I continued," well, nothing bad. He just asked who you were."

"Oh okay, well see you."

And then he ran off. Shawn should not be a threat to anyone but I know he looks tough. He is. But, he's also so sweet.

"Hello..." Jordan perkily drags on. Too happy to be grades.

"What happened?"

She gave me a sly smirk and kept her mouth zipped. Her hands come together and she squats slightly with eagerness.

"Jord. What?" I badgered and insisted she go on.
