I stood just outside the gates looking into the woods, I was supposed to be on watch but how could I be after everything that has happened. How could my mother be dead? I mean I know how but how? I couldn't think straight that much was evident. I just felt so numb and cold, I didn't want to believe that she was dead. Right now it doesn't matter, I have to be strong and act like a leader should. My people need to come before my own needs. I stood there motionless as I heard the movement behind me followed by the voice of the only one who seemed to keep me sane at a moment like this.

"First watch is over." It was Bellamy's voice coming closer. "Go relieve Monroe on the south wall. Keep your eyes open." He was at that moment by my side taking my hand. I could feel him both looking at me and away from me toward the woods. We were expecting the grounders any day now, scratch that, any second now. "Anything?"

I shook my head with a heavy sigh. "It's been two days. Maybe the bomb at the bridge scared them off for good."

He looked over at me squeezing my hand as I looked back at him, his deep chocolate eyes searching my own. "You believe that?"

How could he be so good to me? He was caring, and even though he didn't speak of it at the moment I could tell just from the look in his eyes. The look made me just want to cry but I had been through enough of that already, so I shook my head and gave him my answer on the current conversation. "No, they're coming."

Bellamy now started to fidget, something he always did when planning for the worse. "Jasper thinks he can cook up some more gunpowder, if he gets some sulfur, and Raven says she can turn that into landmines. So be careful where you step." By now I was following him back to behind the walls as he spoke but that last sentence he could help but let out a small laugh.

Figures he would say something like that in a time like this. I couldn't help but give a small laugh back. "Ha. Funny."

"What I really need is a thousand more of her tin can bombs I can roll into their village and blow those grounders to hell." It was a bit harsh to say something like that, we stopped and I gave him my best disappointed look. I didn't want us all stooping down to that level. We are not monsters like them. "That's what they want to do to us." I understand that they do but it may be because we just blew up a bridge two days ago while they were in the middle of crossing it.

"I can't believe we survived a hundred years just so we could slaughter each other." And I tried to rack my brain around finding another way, in the mean time I needed to voice that there needed to be a different way to approach this. "There has to be another way."

"Any word from the ark?"

I shook my head as I bit my lip but stopped myself as I turned to face him slightly. "Radio silence."

An awkward moment of silence before Bellamy spoke to break it. "Finally ran out of air."

I nodded. Right now I was thinking how lucky we all are to be down here on earth, at least we get to survive a little bit longer. Maybe my mother was lucky enough to have a quick death instead of having to go through loosing oxygen. "Maybe my mom was lucky, being on the Exodus ship. At least it was quick." And then I realized something. "No one is coming down to save us." I turned to look at Bellamy again as I spoke but he was just looking down.

"Princess, we will figure everything out." Bellamy was now looking back at me as he took my hand once more and forced us to start moving again. "I can't promise you for how long we will be okay but I believe that we can make it through the grounder attack. That is when they finally come." He was trying to make me laugh but I just shook my head at him.

"Not now please."

"Whoa! Guys! Fire!" We heard suddenly as everyone began to panic.

"Go, go, go! All right. Come on." Someone else yelled as the two of us ran to find what looked to be the smokehouse to be in a blaze of burning crimson.
