I pull the jacket closer around my body and walk into the school. Not only was my morning crappy, what with me waking up late and the hot water running out right when I got into the shower, but I was hiding from Ruby. Her call yesterday freaked me the frick out.
"What are you doing?" I jumped at the sound of Mia's voice and turned, holding my hand over my heart. "Motherfucker!" I muttered. She raised her eyebrows. "So...what are you doing?" I sighed. "Hiding. I'm in danger." She laughed. "What?" I rolled my eyes and walked to my locker. "You wouldn't understand."
As I was taking books out of my locker I heard footsteps. "Nice getup." Ruby taunted. I turned. "What do you want?" I asked her. "Are you hiding from me?" She countered. I didn't answer that because it would be embarrassing if she found out I was. "Look, I warned you fair and square, okay? So watch your back today." She stalked off. Mia shook me. "What was that about?" She asked me. I shook my head. "You want to ditch?" I asked in a jumble. She gave me a weird look. "I have a quiz today," I pouted. "Please?"
I watched as she weighed her options then nodded. "Fine." I smiled and kissed her lightly before pulling her along with me to the front doors. I couldn't let anything bad happen. Ruby was not going to win. No matter how much of an upper hand she had in this.
We ended up on the roof of her car in an abandoned parking lot with a huge bag of fries and chocolate milkshakes between us. "I know you didn't skip school today to take me on a romantic date." I smiled at her. "Dude, I could have. You deserve it." She made a face but smiled. "I deserve to miss out on my education? Again, thanks."
I frowned. "We could go back if-" She laughed. "I was joking Casey!" She reached for my hand and inertwined our fingers. "I really do love the way you spoil me." I turned to her and leaned in to kiss her. Her lips met me half way, and as soon as our lips met the stress and the nervousness went away. There was just me and her on the hood of her car, holding hands. I smiled against her lips.
The one thing that scared me the most was the thought that I might not ever have this again. That we would never be able to do this again. And I didn't want this to end. I wanted to stay like this forever. so Ruby couldn't interfer and the rest of the world would leave us alone.
"Do you think we'll be together for a while?" She asked me, almost like we'd been thinking the same thing. I smiled and gave the answer I was hoping and praying and needing to be true. "Of course we will." And that made her smile so full-heartedly I believed it was true.
"I think we should go buy something," I laughed. "Because your a shopaholic." Her eyes sparkled. "No. I think we should buy something along the lines of bestfriend bracelets, except they'd be girlfriend bracelets." I took a sip of my milkshake. "Seems cheesy and played out, but if it wasn't such a good idea, it wouldn't be either of those things, now would it?"
We ate the rest of the fries in a contest to see who could fit the most fries in each other's mouths and then we got back in the car to go and look for the perfect thing. We got rings. Not too sinister. With our names ingraved on the insides.
When we didn't have anywhere else to go, we went back to my house. My dad had gone on a business trip and my mom was in a meeting. It was just us. And as soon as we entered the house, she atttacked my lips. I smiled against her lips and kissed her back, wrapping my arms around her waist, pulling her as close as possible.
She broke away and started kissing my neck. "I want you to have that surgery so bad..." She whispered. I laughed. "You're not the only one." It made my heart swell with pride knowing that she knew who I was and she still accepted me. Kissed me. Wanted me. It was so shocking that I'd find exactly what I'd been looking for afrter I was done looking. And it was even better than I'd expected. Sure, we weren't perfect; she still pissed me off because of the whole Ruby thing but I'd be okay with that. I could manage.
