The next day was better and yet worse. It wasn’t raining which was a plus. I mean dark clouds were in the sky but it wasn’t raining quite yet. Eleanor walked me from English to History which was nice although Perrie was glaring at her when we passed her in the hallway which confuses me since I thought she was in love with Max. History passed by pretty quickly though I was anxious to see Louis again. I didn’t know how he would act around me this time and I didn’t want to upset him again. I spent all last night dreaming up the things I would say when I saw him again like; “What did I do to you?” or “What’s your problem?” but I knew I would be too sky to even say hello.
When the bell for lunch rang I was so nervous that I almost ran home for lunch but Perrie intercepted me before I could make it to my locker. As we walked into the cafeteria for lunch I tried not to scan for him but I failed miserably, I saw his four siblings were sitting at their normal table but he wasn’t there.
I spent all lunch waiting for him to show up but when he didn’t a huge relief swept over me as well as a feeling of curiosity. Where was Louis and did he miss school because of me?
Thankfully the absence of Louis meant that when Biology rolled around I was much more confident and ready to learn instead of being distracted by his perfect hair and captivating eyes. Wait… not captivating… just extremely attractive… no! not attractive… I'm not going to win this one.
But Louis didn’t show up all class which made my life so much easier. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was the reason he didn’t show. I know it sounds egotistical and all so that can’t be the reason it’s just that after yesterday and the conversation with the secretary I feel as if Louis is intentionally avoiding me.
When I got home I realized that we had nothing in the fridge so I made Des promise me that I was in charge of kitchen duty and all the cooking, something he instantly agreed with. I grabbed some money and quickly made my way to the food shop. This felt familiar. I always cooked for mom back home since she was a more imaginative cook and sometimes her meals weren’t exactly edible. When Des came home I was ready with dinner all made.
“Hey Harry! What’s for dinner?” Des called.
“Steak and potatoes.” Des looked relieved that I hadn’t tried to cook something like escargot.
We sat down for dinner and Des asked me about my day. I told him fine and I had met a few friends of my own which seemed to interest him and surprise him at the same time. I didn’t know whether to be complimented that he took interest in my life or offended that he thought I couldn’t make friends. I then got onto the topic I really wanted to ask him about.
“Do you know the Cullen family?” I asked trying to make my voice as natural as possible.
“Dr. Cullen’s family? Sure! Dr. Cullen is a great man.”
“They… the kids… are a little different. They don’t seem to fit into school.”
I was surprised when Des looked angry.
“People in this town,” he muttered. “Dr. Cullen is a brilliant surgeon who could probably work in any hospital and in the world, make ten times the salary he makes here,” Des continues, getting louder. “We’re lucky to have him – lucky that his wife wanted to live in a small town. He’s an asset to the community! Just because they're newcomers people have to talk.”
I don’t think I've ever seen Des so worked up about something. It was one of the longest speeches Des has ever made.
“They seemed nice enough to me.” I tried to back pedal. “I just noticed that they keep to themselves. They're all very attractive.” I say trying to lighten the mood.
“You should see the Doctor!” Des laughed and I let out a sigh of relief. “It’s a good thing he’s happily married or the nurses would be all over him!”
After dinner I retired to my room.
The rest of the week was uneventful. I got to know every face in the school and in Gym the kids learned not to pass me the ball ever and when we were in teams my teammates would step in front of me if someone had decided to try and take advantage of my weakness. I quite happily stayed out of their way.
Louis Cullen did not come back to school. Every day I watched anxiously until I got to Biology only to see that once again he was not in his seat beside me. By Friday I was perfectly relaxed when coming to school knowing that Louis would not be there. For all I know he dropped out of school and moved to Switzerland!
