Perrie seemed relieved that I was no longer talking to Louis. I think she didn't want to have to compete with someone other than Eleanor for my attention. Personally I tried to avoid talking to Perrie as much as possible due to her never ending questions and invitations to the beach, that girl never gave up.
Max called me up on Monday to ask me who I was planning to take to the dance the next friday.
“I don't know.” I replied realizing that I had forgotten completely about the dance not that I could dance anyway. “I don't think I can go anyway. Who are you taking?”
“I was thinking Perrie.” Max said letting an uncomfortable silence fall. “Unless you don't want me to.” I could almost picture Max pacing on the other side.
“Why wouldn't I want you to ask Perrie?” I asked now confused. I mean I didn't think I ever showed any interest in her at all.
“Oh you know…” Max started, “It just looks like you guys have something going on and I didn't want to you know…” he trailed off again.
“No.” I said, a little more abrupt than I had intended to, “We have nothing going on. You should ask her.”
“You think?” Max asked.
“Yeah. You two would have fun.” I reply now flipping open my Math textbook losing interest in this conversation.
“I will.” Max says with a little more confidence. “Thanks Harry.”
“MmmmmHmmmm.” I say before hanging up. Maybe Max could keep Perrie off my case for a little while.
The next day Max was unusually quiet as he sat beside me. At lunch I notice him and Perrie sitting as far away as possible. When Perrie walked me to Biology there was an uncomfortable air hanging around us. As I sat down next to Edward Perrie finally spoke up.
“So.” Perrie finally spoke up. “Max asked me to the dance.”
“Great.” I said smiling. “You two will have fun.”
Perrie but her lip clearly not happy with my reaction. “I said I would have to think about it.”
I looked at her in shock and disapproval. “Why would you say that?”
Perrie looked at me for a moment before finally saying, “I was wondering if maybe you were planning on asking me.”
I could feel my face turn slightly red and I saw Louis’ head tilt slightly in my direction. “Perrie.” I began try to word this so she wouldn't be hurt, “I think you should tell Max yes.”
“Did you already ask someone?” Perrie said shooting a not so subtle look at Louis.
“No.” I say. “I can't go that night. I have to go to Seattle.”
“Can't you go some other weekend?” Perrie pushed.
“No.” I say trying to keep my annoyance out of my voice. “I can’t. You should tell Max yes. Don't keep him waiting, it's rude.”
“Ok.” Perrie said dejectedly as she turned to walk back to her seat.
I noticed Louis looking my way and as I turned to stare back at him I expected him to look away as always, but this time he didn’t. He just continued to stare right back with his dark eyes. My hands started to shake with the intensity of it all when the teachers voice cut through my concentration.
“Mr. Cullen?” The voice called tinged with annoyance.
“The molecule.” Louis sighed as he turned away from me.
I was still trembling and innerly cursing the fact that he could make me feel this way. How pathetic. As the class slowly rolled to an end I got up and started to gather up my belongings expecting him to dart off as usual.
“Harry.” His soft voice broke through my concentration. I didn't want to turn but I couldn't help it when he called my name. I looked up at his taking in his perfect features up close, his expression was neutral as he kept staring at me.
“Are you talking to me now.” The phrase comes out a little harsher than I meant and I watch as he seems to be amused by this which makes me even more angry.
“Not really.” He says a small smile making a home on his too smug face.
“Then what do you want Louis?” I snap.
He falters for a moment looking for an answer, good. Let it be his turn to not know what to say. “I'm sorry I'm being rude.” Louis finally says, “But it’s better if we aren't friends.”
I narrow my eyes at him angry that he thinks he knows what's best for me. “You could have figured that out earlier and saved yourself all this regret.” I hiss.
“Regret?” He asks just staring at me confused.
“For not letting that stupid van crush me.” I retort.
“I don't regret saving your life.” He says disbelief in his eyes.
“I know you do.” I say simply as I narrow my eyes even more at him.
“You don't know anything.” He says taking a step towards me.
I just turn not wanting to hear any more of his lies. I try to make a dramatic exit, you know those ones in the movies where the main character just flawlessly stomps out and the other is just left staring in awe at the place where they were, but I caught my shoe on the door jam and my books tumble out onto the floor. As I bend down to pick them up Louis is already there stacking the last one onto his neat pile.
“Thank you.” I say icily.
His eyes narrow. “You're welcome.” He retorts.
I get up and stomp off to gym making sure not to trip over anything else and most importantly not look back to see Louis’ face.
