Responsibility.
When your friends and loved ones make decisions that you hate, or that worry or concern you in some way, there is a crippling sense of utter helplessness. There is a sense of being totally powerless and out of control.
But I wonder - If you could be in control, would you really want to be? Would you want to be responsible for their choices? Perhaps the feeling of powerlessness is a blessing. It is a guilt free abdication of involvement or liability. When it all goes thoroughly to hell, when her boyfriend hits her because she decided she could save him, when the new faceless meaningless job is no better than the last, there is no way to tie any of the blame to you.
This is not a tragedy. This feeling of helplessness over responsibility is not a tragedy.
