Camila had only been in Lauren's presence for the last four hours, it was enough to make her feel like she had known the girl since they were children. In some ways she did. They both grew up here, and while Lauren never got too close with the other kids, she did play with them sometimes. And even when Lauren wasn't outside because her mother wouldn't let her, but longingly looking out of the window where they were playing, Camila was watching her. She had always wondered why her parents would never really let Lauren play with them.
Camila once heard the grown ups say that it was because Lauren's dad was still traumatized by the war, and that he wanted to keep his daughters safe. Lauren had the feeling that it wasn't their dad that was keeping them inside all those years.
But she thought that by Lauren asking her to come to her place today, she was trying to finally bring some change into this place.
''Dinner's ready!'' Miss Jauregui shouted from the kitchen.
Camila and Lauren had just returned from Camila's home across the street to inform her mother she wasn't eating home. She seemed surprised when she saw Lauren next to her daughter at first but Sinu was quickly charmed by Lauren. She had to learn her how to do that one day. She could use some of that charm herself when it came to convincing her mother sometimes...
Taylor, Lauren's younger sister, had opened the door for them. Somehow she seemed to find interrogating guests quite amusing.
''So you do have a boyfriend?'' she asked with a grin.
Camila laughed, but she didn't say anything. For she was afraid Miss Jauregui would not approve and keep her from her new friend.
''Taylor, shut up, I'm serious. You do not have to ask every single person you meet if they have boyfriends.'' Lauren said, annoyance clear in her voice.
Lauren's eyebrows were drawn together. Camila stiffled a laugh. She seemed to be so annoyed.
Taylor cringed.
''Not every person, Lauren. Strictly girls. Asking a boy if he has a boyfriend would be disgusting."
Camila shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She never really thought about two people loving eachother with the term 'disgusting' . It was quite disturbing that a 13-year old said this. In her opinion there was nothing wrong with being attracted to the same sex. She obviously wasn't. But the way the 18-year old visibly clenched her jaw was kind of a turn on, she couldn't deny that. Lauren kind of... confused her.
But who did she not confuse with those looks? Camila could swear she had once even seen Shawn Mccain drool over Lauren. While usually his time was spent watching the boys volleyball team with and undeniable smirk on his face. She even heard a story of him eavesdropping in the dressing room. Even he stopped his conversations about the hottest players' ass when Lauren Jauregui walked past him.
''Who told you that?'' Lauren asked her sister.
Camila snapped out of her trance.
Taylor dramatically rolled her eyes.
''Mother did, but obviously it's common knowledge. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Jack nor Eve and Laura."
Common knowledge? What kind of mother teaches their child these things? It shouldn't matter who you love. Her mother never really spoke out about gay couples but she didn't seem against it, like Lauren's mother.
Camila anxiously watched Lauren for a reply. Was she homophobic too? Somehow that thought caused a pang of fear in her. Camila didn't like people like Lauren's mother... She wanted to keep liking Lauren.
