Backstory-

The Mark 4 Iron Man armor was built after the destruction of the Mark 3 at the hands of "The Freak." The Mark 4 was essentially the same suit as the Mark 3 with almost identical functions, aside from a few upgrades. This suit did away with the nose feature that Mark 3 had added and it served as Tony's main suit for quite some time throughout the Invincible Iron Man series.

General Overview-

The Mark 4 not only possesses most of the Iron Man armor tropes that most suits have but it's almost identical as the Mark 3 with the same functionality in many aspects. This model did remove features that were obsolete from the previous Mark 3 while improving on existing ones. 3D knitting technology was implemented to create a force field to defend the suit, increase it's durability, and it's flexibility. One of the main differences between the Marks 3 and 4 was 4's emphasis on improving flexibility overall.

Interesting Side Notes-
One of the reasons the writers chose to have the Mark 3 destroyed was so they could go ahead and get rid of the nose they had given the Iron Man design and return to the previous faceplate.

Featured mainly in Iron Man 2 the Mark 4 was an overall improvement over the previous Mark 3. Tony, while drunk, also uses this Armor to battle with his friend James Rhodes, who had donned the Cinematic Mark 2 armor.
