the bell rang, and all the students quickly strolled out of the dark classroom. phil caught up to dan as he stood outside the doorway. when phil saw dans eyes, his stomach fluttered with happiness. its weird, because he had actually never felt this when he came in contact with a person before.

"where shall we go for our-"

"chat?" dan finished quickly,"i've actually liked to sit next to the trash cans. everywhere else is basically booked during free period. so many clubs and other social gatherings take place in places such as the library and classrooms. its quite clear you don't socialize very much."

"well, you dont seem like you're in any better shape at all, howell," phil smiled and continued walking down the hallway. he turned to see if dan was going to follow him. what was he doing? his faced looked down and impressed, mostly impressed. maybe it was the insult. insult? is that the right word? no, remark. remark seems better.

as phil stood, he waited for dan to catch up, which he did after a few moments. he grabbed phil's forearm and dragged him to a can. phil wasnt very anxious for what he was about to experience. a conversation aside a pile of rubbish inside of a metallic can. could this get any weirder?

phil watched as dan let go of his arm and pushed himself against the wall, then sank down and crossed his legs casually. he shrugged, looking up at phil as he stood there in awe and, he had to admit, a little bit disgusted.

"come down whenever you're ready."

phil looked around, hoping this wouldn't ruin his reputation (if he ever had one, which he wasn't even sure if he did), and then sunk down next to his possible new friend. he sighed and looked over at dan, who's dark eyes watched him.

"this is..different," phil smiled and laughed under his breath.

dan smiled, and phil hoped that he didn't make his uncomfortableness noticeable.

9:30.

9:31.

time goes by so fast when there is a conversation between two people who seemed really engaged in each other. if this conversation even included people of that sort. they just met, they don't know each other to have any ties.

"so, where are you from?" dan lifted an eyebrow.

phil looked over at him, suspicious. okay, so he was asking for where he lived. no big deal.

"uhh," he began,"i just live in an apartment a couple of blocks away. the bus ride is only about ten minutes. what about you?"

"i was kicked out of the house about a year ago, my family doesn't like my lifestyle. its pretty lonely out there in the real world. but wait, it gets better, don't worry. my grandma decided to let me stay with her until i can gather up the savings to buy my own apartment. i don't know how i am going to do that, especially when there are barely any good job opportunities around here. but what can i say? being on my own creates many new opportunities. but, maybe a partner wouldnt be so bad." dan shrugged and fiddled with his fingers.

"oh, I'm sorry about you being kicked out of your home. it must have been a tough time to be away from your parents and family," phil's face fell as he watched dan's face, emotionless, as if his emotions had stopped working completely.

too bad he didn't have it any better. but that can be changed.

"i seem like i am barely holding on to life as it is. im so depressed at this point, i don't know how to fix this huge issue. this year, i wanted to make some friends before we all graduate, but i don't know if that will happen this late in the year."

"i will be your friend," phil grabbed dans hand. dan looked up, tears almost pouring from his sad eyes. phil smiled knowingly, and he mentally promised to himself and to dan that he would give him the adventure of a lifetime.
