"dan?"

dan's eyes flashed open as he saw phil with his fringe hanging down on his nose. it tickled, so dan pushed it away. he rolled is eyes playfully and then sat up. phil was crouched beside him, and he held up almonds in a bag.

"what are these?" he asked.

"those are mine, were they in my bag?" dan rubbed his head.

"yeah! can i have some? i am hungry. maybe there is a diner around here," phil opened the bag,"we aren't in the middle of nowhere, are we?"

dan looked around. the cliff they slept beside(thankfully no one rolled over and fell to their inevitable death) was rocky and jagged. roots and plants were growing out of the crack and the blue sky was pale as wispy white clouds, like pulled apart cotton balls, were drifting in the sky. the sun was shining warmly and phil smiled up at it. dan looked over at him as he put his hand up to his mouth to launch almonds.

"we should get going, i don't want to stay behind too long. we still have to find a new place to live, remember?" dan got up and dusted himself.

phil nodded, then got up as he jumped up and down. a metal component jingled in his pocket. dan turned around to face phil. phil stopped jumping.

"did you hear that noise?" dan said. he looked around and then began searching phil.

"dan! it's just my.. uhh," phil looked around aimlessly.

dan tapped his foot in the grass, not producing a sound, but showing suspicion.

"it was my.. oh! my spare buttons! yeah! in case my buttons on my jacket-" phil cleared his throat,"come loose."

dan raised an eyebrow, then exhaled,"well okay. get your things, we are leaving."

dan was suspicious of phil now. it definitely wasn't buttons, buttons make a softer sound. it had to be something metal. and small. it could be anything. he picked up his backpack and waited for phil, who was still shoving almonds in his mouth. when he was ready, the boys continued walking.

there were more trees, grass, plants, animals, and sunshine.

dan's phone was running low on power. it wasn't even dinner time. or even lunch time. they haven't eaten anything proper since the day before, when their food supply was plentiful in their homes. then, behind him, dan felt a big snap.

"ow!" phil's voice could be heard.

dan turned around, phil was face-first in the dirt. he picked his face up and there was dirt in his greasy and muddy hair. he sighed, and flipped his fringe, which sent mud flying. it hit the surrounding trees and leaves.

"you okay?" dan said.

"yeah," phil shrugged and walked over by dan.

then, sirens. lots of them. police sirens. lots of police cars could possibly be in the group. dan stopped. phil stopped. they looked at each other.

"-but we together might not be."

the sirens were getting closer and k-9 dogs were barking in the distance. men shouting could also be heard.

"this way!"

"the dog's sniff is leading!"

"the two boys should be close!"

dan looked over at phil, determined. phil looked back at dan, worried.

"we need to go, now."

dan then took off, pushing low branches away and jumping over logs. phil followed, not as stealthy. the two boys ran as the search team(which the boys suspected thats who it was) were approaching. the sun went behind a cloud, and thunder could be heard. phil looked up as he stopped running. dan turned around seeing phil stopped.

"phil! what the hell are you doing? run!" dan ran  back and pulled phil's hand.

phil still stood and spoke,"dan, i am unhappy. and it is going to storm."

dan whisper-shouted,"forget the weather for one second! we have to go or we will be sent home! or worse, my home!"

he continued to attempt to pull phil from his position. he looked down, and a single tear fell from his pale blue eyes. then, it started raining. it was like a thousand tears. dan couldn't take this, but he didn't want to leave phil behind. he was unsure of what to do next. he couldn't believe this was happening.

then, phil's eyes opened wide, with a deer-in-headlights look.

"dan, we have to go!"

phil grabbed dan's hand and pulled him, who was ripped from his stance. he and phil ran as fast a they could. both of them had pains in their chests from running, but they didn't stop. they couldn't stop. their feet were getting stiff and their ankles were getting to be unstable.

the k-9 dog's barks were getting more intense and louder as the boys slowed down.

"phil, we have to keep going, i swear we can't get caught, there are major consequences," dan crouched down and panted. phil was also crouched too. he was barely able to catch his breath. they had been running for quite some time but the police have not given up.

"cmon team, they should be close," an unfamiliar voice called.

the rain was pouring, and phil looked beaten up. he was dirty, he was tired, he was stressed. dan felt bad for him. then, he noticed something. a hole in the tree.

"phil, over here," dan waved over.

"dan, please, no more," phil waved him off with his hand.

"phil, i promise it will help," dan pointed to the tree.

phil looked up to see the hiding place, soaking. the wood was slippery as he walked over to it and leaned against the surface. dan pushed phil into the small space and hid in there himself. then, there were footsteps.

dan held his breath.

it was over.
