phil looked up as the police car took a turn into a tiny lot. the two officers sitting in the front seats climbed out and one went over to phil's side of the car. he pulled phil out and the other cop came around and snatched himself onto his jacket. the slowly pushed him in the front door. at least it seemed slow. to phil, it seems as if thousands of days and nights were passing as he trudged to that door. his mind was on dan.
when he stepped in, an officer was seated at the front desk, typing on a computer. he looked up.
"is this the man we have been looking for?"
"no, sir, this is his kidnapper. or at least he seems like one."
"well let's take him in this room now." the other cop standing nearby said.
phil was silently walked into a cement room, only a table and three tiny chairs. phil sat in one chair. the two officers sat on the opposite end. their faces were serious and in now way friendly.
"what is your name, boy?"
"philip michael lester."
"how old are you?"
"twenty-nine."
"where are you from?"
"same place dan is."
"what are your relations dan howell?"
"best friend."
"what is your motive for capturing this poor innocent boy?"
"sir, i'm afraid that you must be incorrect. i never kidnapped him. we ran away out of the pure desire for a new perspective on the world and what surrounds us."
"dan's guardian, his grandma, claims that you kidnapped him."
"she doesn't like me as a person. she thinks i am a bad influence or something. at least that's what she has displayed when i am around her. dan wanted to run away because he thought she wouldn't accept him for the way he was. that's what he told me."
"are you aware that his grandma believes you and dan are a thing?"
"what? no, dan and i aren't a thing."
phil felt like he said that too straight forward. he didn't really know the status of him and dan. he didn't know how dan truly felt.
"well, we will keep you here for awhile, just to see if dan howell is really the friend you think he is. we will talk with his grandma privately over the phone. you are to sit here and wait alone."
the two officers left and closed the door behind them. there was a turn in the knob as they struggled to lock the door. a few jiggles were making echoed rattling noises in the gray room. then, footsteps gradually died as the two officers left.
there was no light of day in that room. phil couldn't enjoy the simple happiness of seeing his house plants, or waking up in the morning to the sun beaming through is curtains. he was alone. he felt gray. he felt useless.
------------------------------------------
dan was home. it felt unfamiliar. he slipped his backpack off and tossed it onto his perfectly-made bed that his grandma must have done in his absence. his big window that he had broken was covered with tarp. he couldn't see the sun. the only thing that reminded him of phil. he sighed and looked around the dimmed room. there was no happiness or welcoming vibes. his grandma opened his door.
"dan?"
dans head shifted over to where his grandma stood, her frail hands held together and a smile that tried to be warm.
"are you alright?"
"no. i'm not alright."
dan sighed and stood up,
"do you know how you said you wanted me to make friends before we graduated?"
his grandma nodded slightly, "oh course."
"well, i made one. and what happens? he gets taken away from me... i really am fond of him, grandma, whether he is a friend, or something more."
"you love him?"
"yes."
dan then went to the wall phone in his grandmas house and typed in the number of the police station. they answered after the first ring.
"hello? yes, this is daniel james howell. is someone by the name of phil lester currently at your station? he is?! i mean, um, he is? yes, i would like to know if i can bail him out. yes, yes, i understand. i will be there as soon as possible. thank you."
dan hung up and dashed to his room. he took a rock and threw it at his piggy bank. the glass exploded and landed in every corner of the room. dan was cutting himself on glass as he collected his life savings and stuffed them in his pocket. he ran outside and twirled his keys as he took the only car that his grandma had and started it.
"wait, dan!" his grandma shouted out.
dan waited before pulling out, "what do you want?"
"can i come with? i have a purse full of money..."
dan inhaled and nodded, "yeah, yeah."
the two then were sat in the car, dan quickly driving to the station before the police decided to change their mind.
