Chapter Two

The bell rang it was the end of science and the end of the day. It’s the last week of the year and every day is going to be a half day. Rebecca and I hung back in class so that we could miss the stampede of students running through the halls. My phone bleeped, I got a text message. I looked at the identification: Quinn.

From: Quinn x
Babes schools out where are you two lovely gals?

“Hey Rebecca, I think Quinn is missing us already!” I said pulling her into the hall. I shot Quinn back a text:

To: Quinn x

Bro we coming juz wait aye

We got out of the halls and saw Quinn leaning up against his car in the car park. He had his shirt off as the heat outside was over the top. No site that Rebecca and I haven’t seen many times before.

“Let’s go?” he asked opening the door to the passenger seat.

Rebecca hoped in. I opened the door in the back of the car and got in.

“Yo Quinn crank the tunes bro and wind down the windows” I demanded whilst taking my school tie off.

“Yes ma’am,” he retorted back following my clear instructions.

“Cheers buddy,” chimed Rebecca while singing along to Tiki Taane.

Before long we had arrived at Quinn’s place and were lounging by the pool on the deck chairs drinking L&P.

“Hey babes since its only 1 o’clock do you'z wanna throw a party?” asked Quinn starring off and into the pool.

“Yes!” Rebecca and I screamed at the idea. We recently had gone out and brought new bikinis for summer.

“Quinn I’ll send a text out to some of my mates at school,” I said taking my sunglasses off and putting them on my head.

“I’ll do the same aye” added in Rebecca.

“Cool, let’s get to it. Let’s say start at 2 o’clock?” asked Quinn.

“Sweet as bro,” I said picking up my phone.

The texts were send out and by 2 o’clock almost everyone was here. Music was blasting from the surrounding sound speakers. The pool looked great. Rebecca was standing around flirting with a bunch of guys. Boys were picking up girls and throwing them into the pool sending water splashing over everyone around them.

The populars were sitting on the grass on picnic rugs. People came up to me commenting on my Pepeha and how brave I was to say it in front of such a large crowd. A few people asked why I didn’t speak fluent Māori at school. One person asked why I wasn’t in the school Kapahaka Group. Apparently they have never  seen me preform in it.

I walked into the house to try and find Quinn with my drinks. I saw him in the kitchen. “Yo Quinn bro where my drink aye?” I asked only the slightest bit annoyed that it took so long to get a refill.

“Here it is my lovely. Waikato draught just like the lil lady orders,” Quinn gave me my drink teasingly.

“Bro ya know not to mess with me and my drink,” I said punching his stomach.

“Ouch!” he squealed “That hurt”

I laughed and turned to walk back to the pool. “That bro is what you get for taking so long with my drink.”

I was at the pool side and had my empty can down by my seat when a large dark shadow came into my view. I will have to admit but it was only dark because I had my sunglasses on.

With my glasses still on I looked up at the dark shadow not being able to make out any facial features apart from it being a guy.

“Oi poaka momona you’re blocking my sun light!” I yelled getting really pissed off. I lifted my sun glasses off my eyes and put them on my head. “Oh shit!” I exclaimed standing right in front of me was the schools Pakeha bad boy Jethro.

“Wow! I thought Māori’s weren’t meant to insult people,” he stated starring down at my body.

“Well stop being a perv and move outta my way you’re blocking my sun light” I tried to sit up more in my chair. He finally moved. “Now what do you want Jethro?” I asked

“Ahh, well… you?” he answered questioningly.

I was standing on my feet by now. “Oi… Pakeha say what?”

“You heard me Aroha” he said coming in close whispering it in my ear now.

I saw Quinn rushing over to get him away. Thank god!

“Aroha is this asshole bugging you?” Quinn asked straight up. All I could do was nod. “Well then shall I dispose of him for you?” I nodded again. Quinn picked him up in a fireman carry and chucked him into the pool fully clothed.

“Thank you Quinn,” I said rushing into his open arms. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

“I know babe” he said squeezing me tight. “I don’t know what to do without you either.”
