Alec’s head whipped round at the mention of Magnus’s name and his piercing blue eyes widened in shock.

“What? What about Magnus? What issue?”

Isabelle’s expression quickly darkened at his words and she too moved her irritated gaze to meet his.

“Jace!” she scolded loudly. Isabelle stalked over to him and slapped him angrily on the arm. It didn’t hurt much but the furious expression on Isabelle’s face more than made up for it.

The golden haired Shadowhunter looked between the two siblings warily. Clearly he had opened his mouth a bit too soon judging by the confused and worried look on Alec’s face and the enraged expression on Isabelle’s.  “I haven’t had the chance to explain the situation to him yet.”

Alec interrupted their hushed conversation sharply.

“Would one of you please tell me what is going on?” Isabelle could hear the strain in Alec’s voice and could tell just how close he was to losing it. He was clearly doing everything he could to keep calm and contain his emotions.

Hesitantly Isabelle took a few steps towards her brother speaking in a quiet voice.

“Well… you were unconscious for a long time…we don’t know what happened and both of you were unconscious when we found you…”

“But Magnus has woken up already right?”

“No, he hasn’t.” Isabelle said quietly.

Alec looked stricken and his face paled as he clenched the already crumpled sheets in his fists subconsciously.

“But he’s going to wake up soon…right?” Alec’s eyes were pleading as he looked between his sister and Jace-who, for once, had nothing to say. Alec had never been one to talk openly about his feelings for Magnus, especially not to Jace, but looking at him now it made Jace’s heart clench as he saw Alec wearing his heart on his sleeve.

“Well there’s a slight complication. You were just unconscious but Magnus…well his state is…different.”

“What do you mean?!” Alec cried.

Closing her eyes Isabelle sucked in a breath while telling herself to stop beating about the bush. Alec deserved to know the truth. She should have told him when he first woke up but she hadn’t been able to bear the thought of hurting him like this. She had thought that maybe if she didn’t mention it he wouldn’t bring Magnus up. But that, of course, had been stupid and ridiculous.

Lifting her eyelids and meeting Alec’s worried and expectant she told him.

“Magnus…is in a coma. While you were unconscious you moved and mumbled but with Magnus…nothing. And we have no idea when or if he’s going to wake up.” Her voice tailed off to a whisper as she saw Alec’s brain catch up with what his ears were hearing.

Any remnants of colour in his usually pale skin drained out of him leaving him as white as paper. His eyes bulged and his lips were pressed into a harsh line. He was as still as a statue and Isabelle could see that he had stopped breathing.

“Why didn’t you tell me? By the angel Isabelle WHY THE HELL DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?! You wanted me to stay here when the love of my life is in a COMA?!”

Jace and Isabelle shot each other a panicked look as Alec shouted and attempted to climb out of the bed.

“ALEC! Calm down!”

Jace placed a broad hand on Alec’s chest and knocked him back onto the bed while doing his best not to injure him anymore. But the blue eyed Shadowhunter was in no state to listen.

“Get off me!” Alec shouted angrily, attempting to get up again.

Jace wasn’t having any of it.

Grabbing Alec by the shoulders he shoved him off balance and watched him fall back onto the white sheets of the bed. And before Alec could try and get up again Jace planted a knee roughly on Alec’s chest and seized his wrists, pinning him firmly to the infirmary bed. Alec struggled furiously against Jace’s firm grip but his chest was soon heaving from the weight of Jace on top of him. However he wasn’t about to give up so easily. Raising his legs he continually kneed Jace in the back as hard as he could. Jace grunted, unable to hold Alec’s legs down.

“Isabelle!” he yelled, “Hold his legs down. Urgh.” Alec had landed a solid hit in the middle of his back, “Now, Isabelle!”

With a guilty look at her brother’s face she ran forward and put her weight onto Alec’s scrabbling legs-effectively trapping them.

Alec continued struggling furiously beneath them but in vain, their combined weight was crushing him and his muscles were soon screaming in protest. Finally he gave in, allowing his aching limbs to fall back onto the bed, and just lay there glaring into Jace’s grim face, his breathing laboured.

“Are you going to stop fighting now?” Jace’s voice was strained with the effort of pinning him down and a fine sheen of sweat covered his skin.

Still glowering furiously at him, Alec nodded once.

Jace looked behind him and, after meeting Isabelle’s anxious gaze, removed his knee from Alec’s chest while Isabelle scrambled quickly off of his legs.

“You can’t go and see him. Not until any lasting effects from whatever caused you to fall unconscious wear off. And without Magnus here to heal you you’re going to have to do it the long way. So don’t go making it any worse for yourself by rushing off and injuring yourself further.”

“What about an iratze?” Alec quipped immediately

“Already tried it. It seems to have helped but it’s not going to stop the aching or the headaches that you’re getting, we don’t want you passing out again, so just relax and stay put. At least for tonight.”

Alec screamed in frustration; It was filled with pain, anguish and despair and the sound made Isabelle want to cover her hears and curl up into a corner.

“Get out!”

Jace and izzy looked at each other startled. Alec’s head was throbbing again and a strangle tingle shot down his spine again.

“I said get out. I just need to be alone ok.” His voice was trembling with anger; his throat thick with tears.

“Alec we-“

“LEAVE!”

Isabelle flinched and, grabbing Jace roughly by the arm, fled the infirmary without glancing back.
