They followed the demons silently. No one said a word as the drifted down the streets like ghosts, shrouded in shadows and darkness.

Isabelle was at the front with Jace and Clary just behind and Magnus covering the rear. They hung back slightly, keeping enough distance so as not to alert the demons to their presence but the monsters didn’t even glance round once.

The demons moved swiftly but at a steady pace, neither speeding up or slowing down. Not once did they pause to check where they were going. They just moved as one unit, with a single-mindedness that suggested some sort of compulsion.

This many demons going to exactly the same place at exactly the same time without so much as a fight…there was no doubt someone was controlling them. The group just prayed it wasn’t Alec.

Eventually they seemed to reach the destination: a huge, seemingly abandoned, warehouse. Like a disturbing bunch of hideous school children the demons filed through the large iron doors which clanged shut after the final demon had disappeared into the dark recesses of the building.

“What now?” Clary asked looking from Isabelle to Jace.

Isabelle looked like she wanted to go charging in there slashing and demanding where her brother was but when she spoke her voice was level.

“First things first: We scope out the building. Find another, less obvious way in.” Jace nodded in agreement and the group began to walk again, moving to the back of the warehouse.

It seemed to have been abandoned for a long time. The warehouse was made of steel but it no longer shone bright and silver, layers of dust and grime coating the metal. There were similar buildings situated either side but set further back and as they rounded the warehouse they noticed it was connected to the other buildings as well making one large complex.

Finally they founded a small, wooden door at the back of the warehouse. It used to open only from the inside but the hinges were broken and with a small amount of pushing they managed to get it open.

But no one moved.

They knew they had to go in but part of them didn’t want to because what if Alec wasn’t here? What if this was just a great big, unrelated coincidence? Or even worse, what if Alec was behind all this: the demons, the break-ins, and what if now they were too late to save him?

“What if we’re wrong; what if he’s not here?” Isabelle said ominously.

No one answered because they’d all been thinking the exact same thing.

“And what if he has been-” Jace cut her off angrily, knowing what she was going to say.

“Alec’s not the one behind the demon attacks.”

“But-”

“Jace is right.” Clary added quickly, having had time to think about it. “Regardless of the fact Alec would never do something like that, the first demon attacks happened before he get possessed and definitely way before it started changing him.” Clary’s conviction in the matter ended that conversation-no arguments permitted.

“And as for whether he’s in there…we’ll just have to hope,” she added quietly.

“If Alec is in there I can’t predict what sort of state he’ll be in.” Magnus said delicately, speaking for the first time in a while. “We may be able to force, or,-if we’re lucky-trick the demon into leaving Alec without the need for any…” he trailed of darkly, words failing him for once.
