Finding Alec was not difficult as the demon was hardly hiding. He leant against the back wall of the room, ankles crossed and arms folded, an arrogant smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.

Magnus faced him grimly. Eyes locked Magnus strode towards Alec, pausing when there was only a few feet separating them, and summoned flames with a twitch of his fingers.

“Abbadon. No more games. Leave Alec’s body or I will make you.”

That cruel, spine tingling laugh erupted from his mouth again.

“You are too late warlock. The fire that was once Alec’s soul is now nothing more than a few lingering embers. He is mine now. Mind. Body. And soon…soul.”

Just like that any lingering composure Magnus had left was gone. It felt as though all the emotions that had tormented him for so long: the fury, the anguish, the despair, could no longer be contained.

Magnus snarled in anger and burst forwards, slamming Alec into the wall, pressing into him, using his height advantage to trap Alec’s body with his own. One hand was clenched in Alec’s wrinkled, black t-shirt while the other he held in front of Alec’s sneering face, icy blue flames dancing in his palm.

“Alec you’re in there somewhere. I know you are. I don’t want to hurt you!” Magnus’ voice was full of anguish as he tried to break through Abbadon’s control. “Please.”

But the monster just growled at him, eyes blazing with undisguised contempt. “Your precious little Alec isn’t here anymore,” he mocked shrilly.

“I don’t believe you.” Magnus spat, jerking his body forwards before shoving him roughly against the wall. Alec’s head made a dull crunching sound against the stone.

A high pitched, condescending laugh erupted from Alec’s lips, echoing around the room.

He was taunting Magnus.

Testing him.

Seeing how far he could push before the warlock snapped.

“I am so looking forward to killing you. Maybe I’ll relinquish control just for a moment as you lie dying in the boy’s arms, just long enough for him to see what he has done.”

Magnus felt as though he was being torn apart, splintering into pieces, a piece of glass on the verge of shattering. Conflicting thoughts sliced through his mind.

He refused to kill Alec.

He had to kill Abbadon.

But that was the problem. Magnus could separate them in his mind all he wanted but the truth wasn’t going to change.

In front of him stood a monster.

In front of him stood Alexander Lightwood.

But now…they were one in the same. And he had to get rid of one…

Magnus actually flinched, cringing away from that thought as his entire body, his soul, every essence of his entire being rebelled at the mere suggestion of it.

But what if there is no other choice? A wheedling voice in the back of his mind whispered.

No.
