When the teacher finished writing the notes on the board he turned to face the class.
He smiled warmly.
"Hi!" he exclaimed. "I'm Mr.Daniels, I'm going to be your Language Arts teacher this year. Let me start out by saying welcome to high school. It will be the best four years of your life." he said sarcastically.
A light laugh came from the class, but all I could hear was Marina bursting into laughter. Once again, jealousy overpowered me.
He looked at her, a seductive smile crossing his face. I hated this man.
In the back of my mind I wanted to kill him, and I could feel the insanity pushing forward. But I couldn't tell if the jealousy was making me overreact and I didn't know if he was actually doing any of the things I was seeing.
Marina blushed and looked down. Okay he was defiantly hitting on her. We were only in the 9th grade. He needed to stay away.
"Okay so everyone take out a clean sheet of paper." he commanded calmly. The noise is the room slowly increased and the zippers of the book bags and the sound of paper sliding across the desks was making me jittery.
"Alright, this is a class where you will express yourself. That doesn't mean we use inappropriate language, or write about ridiculous things. All of you seem very smart though." he spoke, again making eye contact with Marina. He continued speaking
"But, I will not give you topics. I don't find that productive in any manner. Of course you will have assignments that don't involve you to express yourself but just to answer questions; but when it comes to the writing, whatever assignments come from me you are free to express yourself." he said warmly taking a deep breathe. "Any questions?" he asked after a brief pause.
Marinas hand shot up. This was really pissing me off.
He looked at her and nodded his head.
"How often to you assign homework?" she asked smiling.
He chortled loudly. An awkward tension came into the room, and I could tell I wasn't the only one who noticed it. People started to stare and had confused looks on their faces.
"Not often Marina." he said, containing his laughter.I wasn't sure how he knew her name, but I assumed she told him when she was in the class earlier.
"Okay Tre- Mr.Daniels." she said correcting herself, and a small giggle escaping her lips. They were on a first name basis now?
"Okay so your assignment from now until the end of the year!" he said excitedly. "Partner up with someone and get to know them. And when I say this I mean really get to know them. Learn their dislikes and likes. Their favorite candy, their pet peeves. What I don't want you to do is interrogate your partner. Listen to them when they speak and make a note of everything they say. Then at the end of the year, you will present the things you learned about them. You don't have to write it on a piece of paper. You don't have to have it presented on a poster board. All I ask is that you tell the class about this person that you've gotten to know. Choose wisely! Tomorrow you can tell me who you've chosen to work with." he added with a laugh. The class scrambled around finding partners.
Marina turned towards me. She gave me a crooked smile as if she was asking me to be her partner. She was so cute I just couldn't help but smile and agree.
I wanted to interrogate her about our teacher, but when she smiled at me I completely forgot about everything.
"This seems like fun." she said trying to break the awkward tension.
I continued to smile like an idiot at her.
