Melody
I really couldn't say that this wasn't awkward. Why the hell would I do that? He probably found it really weird and uncalled for, since he looked at me like a statue. When I got closer to him, before I kissed his cheek, his smell engulfed me, making my mouth water. He smelled so good.
I quickly made my way inside, with Melanie's hand in mine, trying to run away as fast as possible from his wondering eyes. Melanie ran up the stairs, really anxious to see Nana. I really didn't mean to worry her little head, but that was the only way she would listen.
The first time Nana got sick, we moved in with her. We did live with her at first, for about four years after the accident, but then I told her I needed to be responsible for me and my sister. Although even when I was with her at first, I had to grow up way too fast, and after four years, I had a five year old to take care of, by myself. Her house was one of those old-looking buildings, just asking for someone to tear it down. I always said to her that we can sell and buy a new house, but she wouldn't. She said it has too many memories for her to just leave it behind. Before we moved in with her again, I had my own apartment with Melanie, one that was closer to the cafe. But I just couldn't bear the thought of Nana being alone in here with no one to help her. Since my mother's..gone, she had no one but us.
My mother had a twin brother, who is somewhere in Paris, from what I understood. I never mentioned him, because he was never around since the accident. At the funeral, he had a pair of sunglasses covering his eyes, with his head down at all times. He said nothing, till everyone was already leaving. I can still remember the way his eyes burned into mine, as if he's silently consoling me. The pain he felt was evident in his red eyes, the exact same beautiful ones my mom had. He hugged me tight that day, whispering for me to take care of myself and my sister, and that I was meant to be saved for a reason, then I never saw him again. He sends us a postcard every six months, but that was it. I couldn't really blame him. He had lost his other half, the one who was beside him all the time for about forty years. Although I was always left with the feeling that he might've made it all better. He even left his mother behind, and that couldn't have been an easy thing to do.
As I was lost in my thoughts, Melanie started yelling at me to come inside already. Shaking my head, I entered the house and locked the door behind me. Lanie was sitting on Nana's lap, resting her tiny head against her shoulder.
"Mel! Nana's going to tell us a story! She's feeling much better!" She exclaimed, way too happy, and my reaction wasn't the same as I took one look at Nana and knew she lied to Melanie. Nana just smiled at me, clearly knowing that I noticed her condition, and my heart ached. Her face was paler than usual, she was sitting on the couch near her bed, with all her medication on the stand next to her.
"Really? I'd love that. Let's sit down in front of her, we'll focus on the story better that way." I suggested, in order for Melanie to let Nana rest for a while. "But it has to be a short story..I have to make dinner." I pinched my little sister's cheek, her protesting in the process.
As she put Melanie down, I saw her struggle, fighting away the pain that I know was there. That made me want to cry. After the great day I had, I knew something was going to ruin my mood.
I didn't really listen to the story like Melanie wanted me to. I couldn't. I had to do something to make things better. Nana needs to be treated for whatever it is she has, although she doesn't want to. She's been lying to my face saying that it's just a light flu but I knew better. I think she still saw me as a kid, not able to handle the truth. But she had to let me help her, she just had to, and I knew just the person to help me convince her.
Two months went by like a blur, and each time I met Christopher, I found out more stuff about him. Although he was a bit distant lately, but anyhow, we were really close now. He even helped me convince Nana to take the tests, and she agreed with Cassidy's help too. She had gotten worse lately And I was going to go and take the results today. I had her take care of the cafe for me, and I was on my way to the hospital right now. I prayed these last few days so hard that everything would be alright. It had to.
