As soon as she read what the last sentence held in bold letters, her breath hitched and her eyes widened, as she looked at me in some kind of a trance. She had a look on her face that screamed at me to tell it her wasn't true.
I didn't know it was possible, to witness someone's life crumble in front of them in just a second when you're in front of them, but that's exactly what happened in Melody's case. Her eyes filled with tears, and I saw her grip the papers tightly in her hands. It looked like her head was swirling with so much thoughts she didn't know what to do with herself. I knew I had a sympathetic look on my face, but that wouldn't help with anything. Everything that I told myself I should refrain from feeling, I felt right now. The sight of her so distraught and in pain hurt me in a way that I couldn't explain.
"Hey," I turned her around to look at me as she was trying not to burst in tears. I wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer to me. Her eyes met mine again, "everything's going to be okay, Melody."I told her, trying to sound as convincing as possible. Her bottom lip quivered as she put the papers on the bench beside her and put her arms around me in a bone crushing hug.
It was like she transferred all her emotions on to me as she hugged me tighter, soaking my suit with tears, and I felt her pain. She held onto me with such desperation that I would've done anything I could to help her, just so she wouldn't be feeling like this anymore.
"But she was fine a few months ago," She sniffed and pulled away, her eyes red and puffy, her eyebrows knitted in a frown, "they always told us it was nothing serious!" she exclaimed, getting angry now. "How could they be so careless?!" She shouted, but her voice wasn't that loud. She started taking deep breaths, closing her eyes in the process. I got up and kneeled in front of her. "Melody, we'll figure something out, just try to calm down." I said, putting my hands on her shoulders. She opened her eyes, now taking quick short breaths. She started breathing heavily as she put her own hands on my shoulders, and each second her breaths became deeper. It was like she couldn't breathe at all and I was starting to panic.
"Melody," I said, pushing her hair from her face and holding it between my hands, "calm down. Try to slower your breathing."
She shook her head, "Inh..aler," she managed to choke out, trying to point to something beside her. I quickly got up and started to rummage through her bag, where the hell was that fucking thing!
"Chr..is," She tried to say as she reached out to me, her arms holding mine for support. I cursed repeatedly until I found it in an inside pocket, reaching out I quickly pulled it out and removed the cap before shaking it and putting it to her mouth. She held it between her small hands as she took a deep breath and waited a few seconds before breathing out slowly through her pursed lips.
She repeated this a few times and I let out a sigh of relief as she slowly started to breathe normally, and put the inhaler down beside her. I returned to my position in front of her and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug.
