Maylee
Tuesday evening, 6:00 PM.
I watched patiently as my best friend tapped his pencil against his notebook, trying to come up with an answer to the last math problem on the page.
Outside, the rain had just settled to a light drizzle and the condensation from the coldness was clearly covering the large window that sat on the other side of the room.
Pulling at the sleeves of my knitted sweater, I tried my best to keep warm, though we were inside and we could just turn the heat on. My eyes continued to watch the boy sitting only a few feet away from me, as he was concentrated on finishing his homework so we could hang out like we usually did after school.
A few quiet minutes passed, the only sound coming from the rain tapping on the window, when he suddenly closed his notebook and set it aside.
"Are you done?" I perked up, breaking the silence that had filled the room for a while now. He nodded in response and stood up from the chair he had been sitting in, causing it to creak a bit.
The mattress lowered as he sat next to me on the bed, playing with one of his gold bracelets in his hand.
"We should watch a movie." I softly bounced in my sitting position, causing the bed to shift.
"Like what?" He questioned as he shot the bracelet out of his hand and across the room.
"I don't know. Whatever you want." I said, scratching my forearm. I watched as he stood up, sauntering over to the bracelet on the ground and picking it up.
He opened his mouth to say something but the light chime from his phone interrupted his words. Sticking his hand into his pocket, he pulled out the mobile device and looked at the screen, his small grin dropping to a frown.
"What's wrong?" I stood up and walked over to him.
"It's Scooter." He sighed, running his right hand through his hair in frustration. "I don't understand how he thinks I can work on so many songs in one day." He rubbed his hand over his face, laying it on top of his mouth before heaving a loud sigh.
"Are you going to go?" I looked at him, hoping he would say no.
"I have to, or he'll cancel my tour. I'm sorry May." He looked down at his feet before meeting my gaze.
"It's okay. It's not the first time and I know it won't be the last." I pushed a smile, bummed that I couldn't hang out with my best friend like we had planned today. "Say hi to Selena for me." I added, looking down at my fingers as I twiddled my thumbs.
"Look, I promise we'll have time tomorrow." His hand lifted my chin, softly stroking my skin with his thumb.
"Promise?"
"I promise." He smiled, causing me to return one.
I wrapped my small arms around his torso and rested the side of my head on his chest, feeling his strong arms embrace me not long after. Breathing in his scent, I closed my eyes and cherished this moment as much as I could.
I know I won't always have my best friend around, especially when he's on tour for 5 months, so I'll take what little time I have with him now and not ask for more.
I'm not going to make the same mistake as I did the first time, when I took it for granted that he would always be there because all of a sudden, he left to go on his first tour and I wasn't used to him being gone for such a long time.
After a while, he pulled away, unwrapping his arms from around me. The gentle smile on my lips dropped to a slight frown as I watched him pick up his backpack and shove his notebook in.
A loud clap of thunder erupted, making me jump at the sudden noise. I knew it was raining outside but I didn't know there was going to be a thunderstorm.
"Great. I love driving in the rain." He stated, sarcasm lacing over his words.
"Be safe." I stifled a laugh, collapsing on my bed once again, sprawling my body out as I usually did when I was bored. Looking up at the ceiling, a familiar face came into view as the person stared down at me, a grin on their lips.
"So you're bored." He chuckled, tickling my sides. Immediately, I tried to push his hands away but couldn't contain myself from laughing so much.
"Stop!" I managed to get out as my stomach started to hurt.
Being the respectful friend he is, he pulled his hands away from my sides, allowing me to sit up and lightly punch him on the arm.
"Ow, what was that for?" He whined, rubbing his arm as if it hurt more than it should have.
"I don't like it when people tickle me." I pouted, hugging my stomach because I literally felt a cramp from laughing.
"I know. I'm just teasing." He snickered, running a hand through his golden brown hair.
A small chime came from his phone, interrupting us once again. I managed to sneak a peek of the screen and a picture of Scooter Braun popped up.
"What's up?" He answered the phone.
I heard some loud fussing coming from the other line and then a long beep.
Slowly pulling the phone away from his ear, he let out a loud sigh of frustration, hanging his head to the floor briefly.
"I'm guessing you have to go..." I pursed my lips.
"I'm really sorry. I promised we would hang out tomorrow, remember?"
"Yeah, of course." I nodded, hugging my knees to my chest slightly.
"Bye." He chuckled, walking over to me and hugging me. My face was smushed to his stomach, as it always was when he gave me those bone crushing hugs while I was sitting.
Breaking away, he made his way out the door before disappearing into the hallway.
"Bye, Justin."
