The sun is already flooding through the windows by the time Karkat finally falls asleep. Kankri's really loud snoring echoes through the apartment, leaving me as the only one awake. The bleeding stopped, but my face is still worse than it was before Kankri cleaned it. And not to mention my sheets. And my clothes. And Karkat's clothes. Cleanup is going to be a bitch, but I have a feeling that the boys won't let me do a thing until my wounds heal.
I lay still for a while, listening to nothing but the birds and breathing of my cuddlebuddy. And the snoring of his brother. Sometimes, I hear him mumble random phrases in his sleep. I think he's having troubled dreams, though, because he really says 'no', and 'don't leave' a lot. I feel bad, but don't wake him.
Eventually, I hear Kankri get up. He opens my door, and we stare at each other in awkward silence. After a long pause, he quietly picks up the paper towels and begins to clean my bloodridden face yet again.
"Do you think these will be fine without stitches? The water has risen quite high, and I don't think the medics will arrive in our complex for quite a while." I nod as he wipes away the dried blood. His touch is gentle, like Karkat's. He can go closer to the cuts this time, because most of it has scabbed over, but it still hurts. A lot.
I since, and Karkat begins to stir. We freeze, waiting to hear a sound from the slumbering crab. He stays silent, and Kankri continues to dab at my cuts.
About an hour goes by until Karkat begins to wake up. By then, Kankri was able to use my limited food supply to make a half decent breakfast of thawed burritos and untoasted toast. The power is srltill off, so we have to rely on sunlight.
"What time... is it...?" He asks, slowly pulling away from our embrace. At first it seemed to make him flustered, but once he realized I really don't care, his red face returned to its normal state. Kankri checks his watch.
"Nine thirty-four." He replies, taking a painful bite of the lukewarm burrito.
"Ugh... is it still flooded?" I see him look at my face with a grimace.
"Very much so, I'm afraid. I think our house may be destroyed as well..." he says, his voice trailing off.
"And just what the fuck does that mean for us?"
"Well, first off, it means that we have thousands of dollars of damage I need to sort out; but it also means that we are now officially homeless."
"Shit."
"'Shit' is right." I look up at the two upset trolls.
"If you guys want, you should know that you're both welcome to stay here, if you like..." I say, slowly propping myself up onto my elbows. Karkat is quick to grab my shoulders, though, and tentatively lays me back down.
"There is no way in hell I am allowing you to get up, y/n." He says, then looks over to his brother, expecting an answer to my offer. Kankri pauses, in thought about what to do.
"Are you positive that we would not inconvenience you, y/n? It would be quite cramped, considering the small size..." I give a small shake of the head. There's half of a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and my room; but I'm not picky about space. "I guess I may just have to accept that, then, but I shall insist on paying rent."
"No, Kankri, it's really fine. I don't need any money, I would just want half the water and light bills."
"I insist."
"But the governmen-"
"Not hearing it, y/n" I throw him a half-frown and lay my head back down with a sigh.
"Fine."
