I feel a warm arm wrap around my shoulders as the movie begins to play, causing me to tense at first; but then deflate once I get used to it. I bury my face into his sweater, inhaling the warm smell of his manly cologne, which was obviously just bought for this date. It's his turn to tense, but I can feel his body ease with mine. The film rolls, and I focus on the screen until I drift to sleep.
When the credits start, I look up to see Karkat staring in shock.
"A-are you okay?" I ask, raising an eyebrow. I don't think he noticed my unconsciousness
"Holy shit. I... I think I found my spirit animal..." he says, his voice just above a whisper. I crack up, spilling a piece of popcorn onto the floor. It makes complete sense, in all honesty. I know what Deadpool is like, even though I fell asleep. Why else would I want to see the movie?
"Are you really kidding me?" I ask, my laughter making it hard to breathe.
"He's so badass..." his voice trails off. I grab his hand, pulling him up.
"Okay, Karkat, I understand that you found your new hero. Now let's go." He follows me out of the theatre and into the chilly night, and we start to make our way to the car. Once we get out, I feel him awkwardly try to hold my hand, and I smile while entwining our fingers together.
When we get in the car, Karkat finally speaks up.
"I think I want a deadpool shirt." My face twists in a mix of real and mock shock.
"Oh my, I thought you only wore that sweater!" I say. He shrugs.
"Maybe your human culture is rubbing off on me. Just a little." I laugh, turning the radio onto the alternative station. As we head towards the apartment, I quietly hum to the sounds as I stare out at the bright lights of the night. I begin to wish that I didn't pass out, because I missed out on the whole movie, and because now I'm wider than awake. It's eleven, yet the whole town is ablaze with people, as if the rest of the city's population syncs with my jittery energy. Karkat keeps his eyes on the road, but I see his attention linger towards my slumped form every now and then.
The car finally reaches its destination, and we get out with good moods and hands full of buttery popcorn saved for Kankri. Climbing up the stairs, I quietly make my way towards the door and silently unlock the enterance. The place is dark, so we have to tiptoe towards my room, careful not to wake the sleeping Siri troll. Once inside, I turn on the lights and let out a huff of exasperation.
"Good thing we didn't wake the walking lecture hall," I joke, taking off my light jacket. Karkat laughs and flops on my bed, pulling out his phone as I look for some pajamas. I don't think I've ever seen him this happy before, to be honest. His eyes are filled with a light not yet to be seen by any living mortal.
I pull out some fluffy pants and a sweater, changing in the comforts of my tiny closet with relief to crawl out of my normal clothes. When I walk out, I sit next to Karkat.
"I am not tired whatsoever." I say, pulling out my iPad, whirring it to life and loading up YouTube.
"I guess I'm neutral, but I could stay up." He says, getting situated next to me. We had a lot of contact during our date, but now it seems sort of awkward. I try not to let it get do me, though, and curl up next to him, causing both of us to tense at the touch... again. I put on some Buzzfeed videos, but then just turn on American Horror Story. The show rolls on for a few hours until I look out the window, seeing that it's already two o' clock. Both of our eyes are still snapped open, though, so I get up to make us some snacks, still careful not to wake up Kankri.
Silently, I pull out a box of Twinkies and some Doritos, then slowly make my way back to the room. I shut the door quietly, then tear open the packages of sweet and savory deliciousness.
"Want some?" I ask, motioning for Karkat to take the chips. He grabs a handful, then goes back to his comfy spot on my bed. I sit down, too, but then speak again out of boredom. "Sooooooo......... what do you want to do? For some reason I just can't get tired." I ask. He shrugs.
"I dunno. I think that we've filmed our fucking brains out, but other than that I can't think of anything." I sigh.
"Maybe we could just turn off the lights and, like, talk ourselves to sleep?" I reply, taking a bite of a freshly unwrapped Twinkie, then reaching over to the lightswitch.
"I don't know what we would talk about, but whatever," I turn off the overhead and collapse next to him.
"Well... tonight was fun. Maybe we could talk about that?"
"Sounds like a thrill." I frown.
"You seemed to have been having a pretty good time, Karkat. I mean, we kind of held hands, and... stuff..." I say, a light blush spreading across my face.
"Did you not want to? I mean, I just thought that's what a 'date' was. But I can totally understand if you didn't like it, or if it was my fault. But uh... did you really not like it?" I facepalm in the dark. It's like every time I try to comment about his adorablenless, he automatically thinks that he did something wrong.
"Shut the fuck up about fucking up. I really did enjoy it, Karkat. I just wanted to tell you that it was... nice."
"Sorry."
"Don't be. Like, seriously. I actually had a better date with you than any other guy, to be honest."
"Are you fucking shitting me? All we did was dinner and a movie. Any fuckass could do that." I sigh, circling my arms around his waist, careful not to hit my cuts.
"I really don't want my new boyfriend to be such a pity party, Karkat."
"Did you just... uh... holy shit." I feel his whole demeanor go rigid.
"Yes, I did 'just' say the B word." I giggle, again breathing in his sweater.
"Oh. Uhmm. I-I have no idea why you would want this, but... oh my fucking god."
"Now be quiet and go to sleep. I'm tired now that I had to lecture you." I say, snuggling up to his warm chest.
"Yeah, y/n. Goodnight."
