I feel relieved. For a second there, I thought that Karkat was genuinely hurt by something. Or someone.
I mean, he is hurt, but at least it's just empathy for his poor brother. I try to comfort him in the store, and he seems to cheer up quite a bit, but by the time we get into the car I can see that he still isn't completely at ease.
"D'you wanna go get lunch, or something? I've been craving Subway for the longest time, so we could stop by there if you want." I say, smiling over to his spot in the drivers seat.
"Yeah, sure thing." He says with a small upward turn of his lip. I sigh and ruffle his hair, causing a slight shade of red to spread across his grey cheeks. Thinking back on my previous relationships, I remember not a single one of them being this bashful over physical contact. In fact, the majority of them either tried to crawl into my jeans on the first date or decided to hit it off with several heated makeout sessions. I think it's why I'm actually liking him so much more than usual.
"Aww, there's that smile I was looking for, Karkat." I say with a wry tone.
"Don't fucking get used to it," he replies, although I can tell he's being playful.
"Well, to get used to it to means it happens a lot. So I will."
"Sure thing, babe."
We get to Subway, and I order a tunamelt while he buys some weird meatball thing that looks bigger than my arm.
"You sure you can eat all that?" We sit down at a table in the back corner.
"Hell yes. I'm hungry as fuck." I giggle and begin to unwrap my sandwich as he sinks his rather sharp looking teeth into his own monstrosity.
"You do sure seem like it,"
The sandwich melts on the roof of my mouth with heavenly flavor. I think I may have a liking to sandwiches, or something, considering my nigh fetishistic reaction to the ones Karkat makes.
"I'm guessing you like it?" I ask, trying to hide my grin as he devours the goodness before him.
"mmhmm," is his only reply. I look around at the small shop to see nobody aside from us here. Well, there's the cashier, but he's just tapping on his phone without cares towards any of the nonexistent customers. Mainstream music is playing in the background, and the lack of service allows the sound to flood the whole place. At least I like it.
Taking a sip of my coke, I awkwardly drag my feet across the tile floor. It saueaks, making the bored cashier look up from whatever important buisness he was attending to. I take another sip.
"You gonna finish that?" I whip my head around to see Karkat eyeing my food, and no remnants of his own left in sight.
"Yes. But you can half it." Taking the other half of my sandwich, I hold my hand out and let him eagerly snatch it away and into his mouth.
