9 days until Homecoming
I forgot to mention that the device that we use to communicate blends in perfectly in with my cheek, so when I'm talking to Justin on it, people just think I'm crazy.
"So, what's your plan for doing the impossible?" I asked Justin.
"Oh, I was hoping you'd have one."
"I told you before, it's impossible for me to get a date. WHAT DO YOU THINK IMPOSSIBLE MEANS!!!!!!!!!" Everybody looked at me when I yelled this. "Because... I'm having a vocab. test today, and I need help studying." I heard Justin laughing on the device.
"OK, I just picked up a dictionary. Impossible means... not able to occur, exist, or be done."
"So does it sound like I would have a plan?!"
"I don't know. How about this idea. Write down a list of people that might actually be crazy enough to go to the dance with you. Then start asking them to the dance."
"Hey Jeff," Abby said from behind me.
"Ahh!!"
"OK, I'm writing that down. Ahh. I have a feeling that girl's parents didn't like her."
"Hey Abby. What's up? Well, of course, the sky's up, but that wasn't what it means. Of course, you know that."
"You were gone yesterday and Monday. And you weren't here after lunch last Friday."
"Yep, I was gone. You noticed that."
"Did it have anything to do with that phone call?"
"That phone call." It took me a moment to realize what she said. "That phone call! Um, well, you see. I've gotta go pee really bad. Bye!" Once I got into the bathroom, I realized that that probably wasn't the best excuse to make. I jumped when I heard a voice.
"You like her." Then I realized that I was still wearing the device.
"What, no, that's ridiculous, that's stupid." Then I realized he probably wasn't buying it. "OK, so I might like her a tad bit. What's your point?!"
"Hmm, what were we talking about earlier about girls you should ask to the dance?" I realized he was right.
"Fine!"
"I just feel really bad for Ahhh. She's gonna be really upset."
In the lunch line, my friend Jack went up to me. He caught me off guard because I was talking to Justin on the device.
"You talking to yourself again?" Something about Jack here lately was weird. He was very mean and hostile here lately. I tried to ignore him for the most part.
"I was just going over... my grocery list."
"Sure, whatever. Can I spend the night at your house this weekend?"
"I guess." This was kind of sudden.
"Cool."
This reminded me of a paragraph that I read in The Black Book of Buried Secrets. It was talking about the original Cahill island and how it was founded, and it mentioned something about Gideon's (the founder of the Cahill's) "friend" Damien Vesper, who turned around and stabbed Gideon in the back. Well, he didn't literally stab him in the back, he just burned his house down.
I dismissed this thought.
About The Black Book of Buried Secrets. In between my missions, and trying to get a date to the dance I had to read the book. It was kind of hard to because I couldn't let anybody see that I had it because then they would know that I was a Cahill, or they would try to steal the book. I did all sorts of weird stuff to protect it, like carry it under my shirt.
After I got done eating lunch, I tried to manage to be brave enough to ask Abby to the dance. After 5 minutes, I was finally brave enough to do it. Then the bell rang as soon as I walked up to her.
