You'd probably think that this story had a happy ending. You would be wrong.
About a month after the fight against the Vespers ended, Justin and I were hanging out, having a good time when we heard a knock on the door. I wish I had never answered the door. But I did. And it was my parents.
"Jeff, there you are," they said in the hostile tone that they always use. "We've been looking all over for you." I could tell that they were lying.
"You shouldn't have ran away. Now come with us."
"Hello, who are you?" Justin asked them.
"We're his parents. And you must be the guy who took Jeff away from us."
"What I heard was that you disowned him."
"Shut up. Nobody wants your opinion. Now come with us Jeff." They took my arm.
"No! I don't want to leave Justin!"
"Go," Justin told me, "There's nothing we can do about it. They legally own you. I don't want to get in trouble with the law."
I had to leave. That was the last time I saw Justin in a while.
On the car ride home, my parents were chewing me out, but I was too depressed to listen.
"When you get home," they said, "You're going to have a whole lot of chores to catch up on.
As I was doing the dishes, the song "Starts With Goodbye" by Carrie Underwood was playing in my head. I know it might not exactly be accurate, but it's pretty close to what I was feeling. I could swear I saw Justin's face in the reflection in the window. Meanwhile, my parents were yelling at me to do the dishes better.
Even though I was severely depressed, I knew that someday, someday, I would see Justin again.
