6: Keeping it Together

Cade POV

Tail twitch.

I know what that means.

But how could that be? It's impossible, she's at home.

"Chase, somethings wrong."

"What are you talking about?" Chase says.

"It's Macy, I think she's in trouble." I say. I begin to slow down and turn around.

"Why would you say that?"

"My tail. It twitched."

"What are you talking about?"

"Macy and I, are... connected. In the same way you, me and... Josh are." Chase looks away from me with the mention of our bother's name.

"Oh. Are you sure, you two aren't exactly laced by blood if you know what I mean." Chase says.

"It happened last time. And who cares if I'm wrong? It doesn't hurt to check." I say. Chase shakes his head.

"Skye might be right around that corner! We can't know until we've checked."

"Macy might be in trouble! She's holding my pups. I can't take any chances, I have to go see her." I say. Chase shakes his head again.

"I'm sorry dude, you're gonna to have to go alone. I'm going to stay here and keep looking." Chase says and starts to walk away.

"Dude!" I call after him. "Dude, wait!" Chase turns around.

"What? You want me to give up because your tail twitched? No, I'm going to keep looking for my girlfriend."

I swallow. "How many times has the twitch been wrong?"

Chase looks at the ground. "How many times?"

"Never." He says. "It's never been wrong."

"Why don't you trust me?" I ask.

"I do trust you, with my life. But I love Skye more than I love myself. I... I have to find her. Goodbye." He turns and runs off.

I turn around too and head towards the tower.

Skye POV

Dark room. One light. Next to me is Macy, still passed out. A pup steps into the light.

He has a device that masks his voice, makes it sound like a robot. His face is covered up.

"Skye. Do you love Chase and Cade?" The phantom voice says.

"Yes."

"I thought so."

"Why am I here?"

"So that I can get my revenge on Chase and Cade. They've done something wrong to my family. I can't let them get away with it."

"Chase and Cade protect people! They would never hurt anyone."

"They hurt me!"

"Who are you?"

"I'm asking the questions!" The pup pulls out a needle.

"What is that?"

"What did I say about questions!?" I back down. "This needle is full a special very chemical. It's not strong enough to kill some pup as big as Macy but it will kill someone else."

The pup points the needle at Macy's distended belly.

"NO!"

"Don't worry, as long as I get what I want, the pups will be alive."

"And if you don't?" I ask.

"If I don't? Well, it wouldn't be terrible to see Cade's pups dead now would it?"

"NO!"

Two pups come out of the dark and put tape over my muzzle. Through the tears I see the pup back out into the shadows.

Charm's POV

"Good work mama." I say as I walk into my mother's office. She unwraps the black cloth around her.

"I know. Sit down."

I sit down.

She smiles at me. "Sweetheart, I have an assignment for you."

"An assignment?"

"Yes, a very special one."

"What type of assignment?" I ask.

She flashes the smile of the devil.

"Chase is in this puppy posse, and it has come to my knowledge that it is fairly simple to get in."

"Mom you're not saying..."

"Yes dear. Once I figure out who is more valuable to them and therefore me, I'll fill you in on the logistics."

"You can't be serious." I whine.

"You are my daughter and you will do as I say!"

"Dad isn't going to love you for doing this!"

She slaps me across the face. It stings for a moment, I want to bite her. But I know where I stand.

She laughs.

Why is she laughing?

"I just got the most wonderful idea."

Oh no.
