Eli doesn't bother to wake me up, of course, but I hear Dez's ridiculous alarm clock go off across the hall, so I know when to rise.
I'm unbelievably exhausted, I got such little sleep last night. So many things went wrong yesterday. Which wouldn't be as bad if I had the slightest idea what to do about anything. But for now, I remain lost.
At breakfast, Sabrina looks just as tired. I can't imagine what went through her mind last night.
I grab my bag, and head out the door without a word, but only a minute later, Sabrina manages to catch up to me.
"Ally!"
"Sabrina...how may I help you today?" Being overly-polite is how I talk to people I'm overly-annoyed with, I guess.
"I don't think you're a freak." I stop short, causing her to bump into me from behind. She's basically apologizing, yet for some reason, my next words come out coldly.
"How nice of you to say, dear cousin." I guess I'm also not a very forgiving person. Because as much as I'd like to get to know Sabrina, and actually get along with my extended family, something inside me just prevents any of that from happening.
I don't see Austin all morning, which bothers me, because I'd really like to talk to him. In fact, the only person I see (that I actually know), is Holly
On my way to first period, I nearly trip over her. She's crouched down pick up something off the floor, a pile of drawings in her hand. When I stumble over her, however, they scatter.
"Holly! Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I didn't see you there!" I bend down to help her collect everything.
And for the first time, I see what she really draws. Before, she's shown me a random sketch of hers, and while itwas good, I don't think it was her main focus. Not after seeing these. She draws people. Each person I see is someone who I can recognize as a student of the school. Perfect detail, every flaw, every finery, she has everything.
"Holly, these are amaz-" She snatches the papers from my arms.
"Amazingly personal," she interrupts. Her eyes are icy, a chillier shade of pale blue than normal.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude-"
"It's fine, Ally. I gotta go." I watch her leave, and breathe a sigh of relief when she's out of sight. I had a feeling she'd react this way.
I lift my foot off of the picture I'd hoped she wouldn't notice I'd seen.
I pick it up, and observe it closely. It's not completely finished, I can tell, but the detail is still immaculate.
The way the shadows are cast across Austin's face, my hair moved slightly by the breeze, how our lips meet...everything is exactly how it was yesterday.
I'm at a loss for how she managed to capture everything so impeccably. We weren't even kissing for more than twenty seconds, it's not like she had hours to watch us. Yet this obviously took hours to do. That girl is insanely talented.
Then I stiffen. Not only is she insanely talented, but I've got an insanely difficult problem if she tells anyone about what she witnessed. I have to prevent her from telling Sonali. Folding the drawing, I step into science, my heart pounding.
At lunch, I hurry to my spot as soon as I can, hoping to beat Holly there and then confront her as soon as I see her. But she doesn't show up. Oh, this is bad...maybe she's so embarrassed I saw her "amazingly personal" artwork, that she doesn't want to see me now, or she's realized I must have the drawing currently in my back pocket, and she's avoiding any questions...
