"Ally!" I hear someone call. I freeze, my shoulders tensing up as my brain recognizes the voice. Thank God my door is closed, because if Avery saw what just happened between Austin and I a minute ago...
Austin can recognize her voice too, and I'm pretty sure he's thinking what I'm thinking. We both rush inside.
"Act natural," I whisper, directing him to the bed. I sincerely hope Avery can't hear us. When I open the door, Avery half-smiles, then looks past me.
"Austin, glad I caught you," she says, barging into the room.
"Come on in..." I mutter under my breath, but she either doesn't hear or chooses to ignore me.
"Avery...hi..." Austin greets her unenthusiastically.
"You've gotta talk to Dez," she states plainly.
"I do?" She gives him a look.
"Yes you do! You haven't been spending any time with him since..." She trails off, glancing from me back to Austin, to me again. "Anyways, he's not happy about it...he's in his room, go talk to him. Let him know everything's cool." Austin nods.
"Right. I'll do that...now. See you guys later," he says as he stands up and leaves.
"Now," Avery starts. "How's my favorite lying songbird?" I wince, but don't confess anything. "Why didn't you tell me about you two?" Deny, deny, deny.
"What do you mean?" I ask innocently. She doesn't buy it, though.
"Ally, I literally just saw you and Austin getting just a bit closer than just friends out on the balcony."
"How-"
"It's not like the door was locked or anything..." she mumbles.
"Avery!" I exclaim angrily. Now it's her turn to play dumb.
"What did I do?" I glare at her.
"I can't believe you would invade my privacy and just-"
"I'm sorry Ally. Please don't be mad. I knew you were lying to me earlier, and I didn't know any other way to figure out the truth. I hate being left in the dark. You suddenly just stopped trusting me." I breathe heavily.
"Just because I don't tell you one little thing doesn't mean I don't trust you. It means I wanted to keep something to myself, but you invaded my privacy! How can I not be mad at you right now?"
"All you need to do is simply remember all the amazing things you love about-"
"I'm serious, Avery." Her forehead creases.
"I'm sorry, Ally. I really am. I didn't know it mattered so much if I knew. I didn't realize you cared so much about keeping it secret. I thought you just weren't in the mood to talk," she apologizes softly. I sigh. Avery really isn't the kind of person I can stay mad at, no matter how hard I try.
"It's fine. But please don't do it again. And the only reason I care so much about anyone knowing is...I'm just confused. No one has ever made me feel....how he makes me feel. No one has understood. Except I don't know what it means. I wanted to figure it all out before I told you." She nods.
"Understandable. I'm sorry, again. But now that I know..." The normal glint in her eye returns. "What is going on between you two?" I roll my eyes, but then proceed to tell her about our kisses in the parking lot. She bounces up and down in her seat on the bed. I has a feeling she'd react this way...
"Avery?"
"Yeah?"
"What are Austin and I, if we aren't exactly friends?" She thinks about it.
