What have we gotten into?

Blue

After searching the whole school for Gum, we finally found him.

Surprise, surprise, he was with a girl.

I recognised the face of her, but not the name. I wanted to leave, not only were we in a secluded corner of the orphanage, but he was obviously preoccupied. I mentally slapped myself. This is Pig, my best friend, not matter how much I wanted to run away, I had to stay. Pig cleared her throat. Gum and the girl broke apart. He gave what he probably thought was a charming smile.

I can tell you now, it wasn’t.

“Hi,” she said. Her tone could have been mistaken as friendly, but I could hear all the malice underneath. He grinned at her, the girl clung to him. “Hey Pig, Blue” I shivered; he said our names like we were his prey. Swallowing my fear, I said in a shaky voice; “Uh, can we please talk to you…alone.” Gum nodded and asked the girl to leave. She wasn’t happy about it, but obeyed anyway. Leaning on the desk behind him his raised an eyebrow expectantly at us. I was suddenly aware at how frail Pig was and how weak I was.

Oh, shit. What have we got into?

“We need to talk” Pig stated, cutting to the chase. “Boy do we ever, baby.” Gum replied, his eyes travelling the length of her body. She looked mildly creped out. I decided to save my friend from answering. “How did your parents die?” Gum raised his eyebrow at the sudden change of topic. “Why do you care?” He asked me moving away from Pig, who was looking extremely suspicious. “Because unspecified sounds very unspecific” To my surprised he laughed. What kind of weirdo laughs at his own parent’s death? “You been researching me, you little bitch?” His voice was filled with venom. Pig took a step closer to me. I tried to calm myself down by the fact that there was two of us and one of him.

It wasn’t working.

He moved towards us and Pig and I flinched in synchronisation. Smirking, he stepped through the gap between us, brushing me ever so slightly with his hips, and walked towards the door. He closed it and locked it. The old lock echoed the sound.

Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.

Silence followed. Montana looked offended. “Come on guys, that was the most kick ass theory ever.” Paige laughed.  Stephan looked thoughtful.  “But is Ricky’s dad really capable of this?” I snorted. “Stephan, my dad is shit crazy; he’s capable of really anything.” Montana looked at me, “Do you believe me?”

“Yes.” She beamed at me. “That’s two. Paige, are you with me?” Paige nodded. “Better than anything else we’ve come up with” Stephan looked exasperated, “Just because its theory doesn’t mean it’s right.” Montana stuck her tongue out at him. “If I can get substantial evidence, will you believe me?”

“Yes. But you haven’t got any evidence besides a hunch.” Montana walked over to her computer, fingers moving in a fast blur. “Watch and learn my annoyingly logical friend. Because soon, you will be eating your words.”

Okay, great. So me and Pig are trapped in an old classroom with a physco.

Cue Gum.

He was walking towards us, his eyes taking on a malicious gleam to them. His steps were slow and sure, carefully picking his was towards us. By the look on Pig’s face she was thinking the exact same thing as I was:

Shit, shit, shit and shit.

Gum laughed, enjoying the obvious torment he was creating. “What’s wrong, laddies? Stepped out of your boundary’s?”

Oh how right he was. We had not only surpassed our boundaries but kicked them down leaving a, Come and get us sign in the dirt. “No,” Pig answered, sounding surprisingly confident, “We haven’t. You on the other hand? I’m starting to wander if you have any” Gum laughed, one of those laughs that belong to a guy with a moustache stroking a cat. “I should have kept you, you have plenty of attitude.” He should have kept her? Like an animal? God, he is insane…and not in a good way. I looked at Pig. She was looking at him with a ‘holy hell his mad’ expression. Gum laughed again. “I’m sorry. Am I scaring you?” These words could sound nice, but the way he said it, with the mocking edge to his voice, it made you want to run. “I am so sorry,” He said, moving towards us, “Here, does this make it better?” Suddenly, he was changing. His eyes had sunken in to his skin and his mouth was moulding together.

It took about a minute until he had finished.

I stared at him. He was pale, wet skin holding his mouth together. His eyes and nose were completely gone, his clothes left in a shredded pile on the floor. His spine was sticking out and he was hunched over, his finger nails had turned into claws.  Oh god. Gum was some type of mutant.

After 10 seconds Montana came up with substantial evidence.

Boy did we feel like idiots.

Smiling smugly, she showed Stephan the page. As he was reading his eyebrows shot up into his hair. “Oh… oh God…” Stephan was surprised. This must be very surprising. “What?” Paige asked impatiently. Montana showed her the page. Her reaction pretty much a twin of Stephan’s. “What the hell is it?” I asked them. I joined them all at the computer. Montana was on a newspaper cite. An article was pulled up about an attack on somebody. The article read:

ATTACK ON MAN

A man, who wishes to remain anonymous, was attacked by a rouge criminal as he was walking back to his home. After the incident the man said he was more; ‘annoyed than scared- - I have work to get to” The police have since caught the perpetrator.

That was it. The end. What was the big deal? “Err…” Montana sighed impatiently. “Think of the ‘rouge criminal’ as a mutant, and then look at the picture below”. I scrolled down and saw a house with an expensive looking car parked in front of it. Under the picture I read the caption house where man was attacked. I paused. Holy shit. I looked at the house again, taking in the gates at the front and the windows and expensive doors. I suckered in a breath. “That’s my dad’s house” Paige clapped. “Finally Ricky, to think that we recognised your own house before you” I glared at her. “That is not my house” She rolled her eyes as whispered; whatever. “Urg. Will you two stop fighting?” Me and Paige looked at Montana. She smiled. “That’s better. Anyway, so instead of ‘innocent man attacked by rouge criminal’ think ‘incredibly guilty man’s experiment turned on him” I stared darkly at the screen. “Sounds like him.” Montana smiled brightly. “I know? Honestly guys, what would you do without me?” I don’t think she intended for an answerer to that question. “Okay.” Stephan said “We have information, now; we try and get more specific details.” Paige and I groaned. “God, Stephan. We have been researching for, like, two days. Enough already.” Bad move Paige. Don’t back chat to the man. “Do you know what happened to Montana? Why’d she faint?” Paige rolled her eyes. “Never mind Stephan.” I checked the time on the computer. 3.00pm. I found myself itching to go check the TV in my room. “I’m going to my room.” I started walking off. As I was walking up the stairs, Stephan asked me, “Why?”

“Research.”  I called back to him. I nearly sprinted into my room. I checked the TV.

Just an empty bathroom.

“BLUE WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?” I yelled (but not too loud) at the TV. I don’t why I lost it. It might have been because of the fact that my dad is probably creating some master race of mutants, or that I have been out the house. I sat on my bed and buried my face in my hands. “Just tell me where you are Blue.” I was dimly aware of the alarming rate in which I changed topics. “Ricky?” A voice asked.  “Ricky, are you talking to a TV? And who the hell is Blue?”
