Ricky
Montana looked us all, brown eyes alight with excitement. Unfortunately for her, she was met back with the annoyed and tired glares we were giving her because she woke us up at 3 o’clock in the morning. With one glance at us she gave a frustrated sigh. “You guys are never happy when I, the brilliant mastermind, do my thing and I mastermind. It is now your turn to explain your unforgivable actions,” She turned to me, “Ricky you first.”
From my spot next to Blue, I looked at her with sleep deprived eyes, “I had a nightmare.” I heard Blue snort, and then a sarcastic; “yeah, a nightmare” Montana, however, sent me a withering look.
“ ‘I had a nightmare’,” She mocked me, “Is not an excuse, man up.” She shot her critical and quite frightening gaze to Stephan.
Man, did that girl have guts.
“And what’s your excuse?” Stephan stared right back at her, a cool expression on his face.
“It’s three o’clock in the morning.” He said quite simply.
“Well you were up weren’t you?” She accused, “You have no right to complain.” Stephan sighed and shook his head. Montana turned her accusing finger to Paige. All the blonde girl did was raise an eyebrow.
“I’m too tired to care.” Of all the things Paige could possibly say, that probably would have to be the dumbest.
“To care?” She repeated “You are too tired to care?” Paige actually took a step back, a visible, real step back. If I was in her position, I would run, run over hills and through rivers; I would just get the hell out of there. As it was we were stuck in the lounge room, confined to the walls that trapped us like rabbits.
“Um, yes?” Paige answered.
“Why are you all so impossible?” Montana huffed, collapsing onto the armchair. I cleared my throat.
“I think you forgot someone.” She looked up at me, through her square framed glasses.
“Huh?”
“Blue, idiot, why aren’t you giving her the third degree?”
“Because I like Blue.” I frowned.
“You’re mean.” I told her.
“You smell.” She replied.
“Cow.”
“Ape.”
“ENOUGH” Stephan interrupted. He closed his eyes and attempted to calm himself. “Montana,” He addressed the purple hair girl, “You had a theory?” Montana slid out of the arm chair and on to the floor. Standing up as she plastered a triumphant smile on her lips.
“Finally someone who appreciates my genius.”
“Shut up and talk.” Stephan cut her short. Sparing him a glare, she started to talk.
“About that freaky mutant, you know the one with the sharp teeth and no eyes and the-“ Stephan placed two fingers to his temple.
“Please, Montana, just hurry up.”
“Fine. Due to Stephan’s impatience and horribly lacking sense of fun, my creativity has been cut.”
“Montana!”
“Stephan!” She mocked. He glared at her, which made her gulp and continue. “Have you ever thought that it’s just not a mutant?”
“No.”
“Shut up, Ricky. You’re ruining my genius.”
“It’s not me that’s doing that.” I retorted.
“Yes it is. Anyway, what if it was in flux?” Paige scrunched her face, which meant she was thinking.
“What do you mean?” Hands on hips, Montana sighed.
“What if the mutant, which I am going to call Steve, could change forms.”
Blue paled.
“You mean from human to ,err, monster?” I asked her. She finger snapped.
“Yess! Now you’re getting it!” Stephan had his thinking face on. His mind whirring.
“But isn’t that banned technology. The government outlawed it as soon as they had the capability to create something like that.”
Blue paled even more.
“That would explain why we couldn’t find any information!” Montana exclaimed, “Highly illegal and critically threatening things usually leave no trace.”
“And the pack aren’t saints, they wouldn’t even care.” I added, the atmosphere holding a feeling of enlightenment.
“Montana Rose you are a genius!” Stephan everything but shrieked. Montana’s response was to smile.
“That’s old news.”
I glanced at Blue. Her usually pale skin was basically white. Blue eyes wide and her fingers clutching at the material of the couch.
Stephan continued ranting.
“So the mutant that attacked Ricky’s dad was one of these shape shifters?” Montana nodded.
“Maybe the same one, we don’t know how many are out there.”
“I think there’s at least two.” Blue spoke up. He voice wasn’t unsure, just shaky. She was nervous?
“How do you figure that?” Stephan asked Blue, looking at her as if he just realised she was here. She looked at me, bright eyes unsure. She sighed.
“I think it’s time I told you about the ‘Gum situation.’”
