Mom is waking me up earlier than usual, telling me I have a visitor joining us for breakfast. I squint at her in confusion. There's literally no one who would want to eat breakfast with us– unless my dad decided to come home for some odd, twisted reason. I drag myself out of bed, trying to keep as much time between now and the moment of meeting my father after seven years.

When I walk into the kitchen, I'm surprised to see Adam sitting in my father's chair at the dining table instead of Jeff himself. Relief washes over me, and the scowl that was on my face is replaced by a sleepy smile.

"What in the world are you doing here?" I ask him.

"He's driving you to school. Eat up," says my mom, serving us hot pancakes. My smile widens and I inhale the scent of the pancakes.

It's been years since I had a real breakfast. Pancakes? I'm stunned Mom remembers how to make them.

"I have to run," she says, already halfway through the door. "I'm working overtime so I can be home to make dinner tonight."

"Dinner?" My mouth is full of pancakes, and I nearly choke on it.

"Yeah, Adam insisted on coming tonight, too. Gotta go. Love you, hon." She blows me a kiss and slams the door behind her.

I face Adam who's smiling at me with a mouthful of pancakes. "Dinner?" I repeat.

  "Why not?"

"Why not? Why eat with us at all?" I ask, ruder than what it was meant to be. His smile doesn't waver though. If anything, he's on the brink of laughter.

"Hurry up with those pancakes, Monkey. We're gonna be late."

*~*~*~*

This morning I learned that Adam has more money than I thought. No one would ever guess a guy who always wears a sweatshirt and jeans owns a sports car.

I don't really know cars, but it's got two seats. It's black and shiny, and knowing how clumsy I am, I wouldn't want to lay a finger on it.

He catches the attention of the students still standing outside with his expensive, shiny sports car. Everyone starts whispering when I step out of the car and walk into school with him.

We go our separate ways to our separate classes, and lucky me runs into the blonde who threw me under the bus before I make it to math.

And just to make it more eventful, she catches me in the act of trying to go to the bathroom. I push open the door, and there she is, sliding on a layer of red lipstick.

I go into a stall and come back out to wash my hands, only to find that the blonde is just standing there, waiting for me to get prepared for what she has to say.

"I don't get it, you know," she begins. "You pay no attention to Danny, but he still insists on chasing you. You're interested in a completely different person, but Danny still wants you."

"It's funny how you somehow manage to accuse people of things in the bathroom. It's like your safe haven for gossip, huh?" I say, paying attention to her accusation, but obviously pretending that I don't care about it.

"What is so special about you that two guys can see?" she scoffs. The blonde shoves her lipstick into her purse and stomps out of the bathroom as I proceed to washing my hands and making it to math on time.

I honestly thought nothing of it, not once during the day. I sat with Adam at lunch. The blonde was sitting at the designated "cool kids" table, still trying to snag herself a Danny Edwards by hanging off his arm, twisting a curl of her hair between her fingers. That was most of the attention I'd given her so far today, excluding the time in the bathroom. She wasn't done with me. Oh, no. She had to make it clear that I have one too many secret admirers.
