How to start

Already decided? If yes, keep on reading, if no.... just keep on reading if you want xD

I suggest you guys have a cosplay buddy with you (a best friend, sister/brother, cousin, a classmate or etc.) and you guys can do it together!

How to start cosplaying:

First:  Pick a character whom you'd like to cosplay (obviously).

I suggest you guys pick an easy character from:

Anime:
   》Tamako Market
   》Baka and Test: Summon the Beast
   》Ranma 1/2
   》The file of young kindaichi
   》My teen romance comedy: SNAFU
   》Maid Sama
   》Anohana
   》My little Monster
And ETC.

Cartoon:
   》TAWOG (The Amazing World Of Gumball)
   》Adventure Time
   》Gravity Falls
   》Clarence
   》PowerPuff Girls
   》We Bare Bears
   》Steven Universe
   》Phineas and Ferb
   》Harry and Bunnie
   》Camp Lake Bottom
And ETC

Second: Research your character

Find a full scale picture of it's normal and everyday clothing. Watch the anime/show/movie and take note of his/her movements (so you can imitate it), take note on what kind of fabric the clothing might be based on its movements. Research on other cosplayers that has cosplayed your desired character.

Trust me, it'll help.

Third: Seek advice

If possible, ask cosplayers. Don't be afraid to make cosplayer friends even before the convention. Ask them about how they do this and that.

And if it's not possible, ask the seamstress, even your mom to have an idea or two on the fabric and stuff.

And if all else fails, simply look it up online, and I suggest that you look at Youtube and Pinterest.
