I was in the shower when my phone rang.
Cursing under my breath, I extended a dripping arm out and after groping along the countertop for a moment, my fingertips curled around the device.
Seeing Katy's name, a small smile tugged at the corner of my mouth as I answered the call and pressed the phone to my ear.
"Good morning." I greeted, not realizing how much I wanted to hear her voice until she spoke.
"Good morning."
"What's up?" I questioned, reaching behind me and turning off the water before stepping out, wrapping a towel around my waist and sitting down on the closed seat of the toilet.
"I have a question for you." Katy said softly, her voice wavering nervously.
"I'm sure I have an answer for you then." I replied, my wet hair dripping into my eyes.
Katy took a deep breath before speaking, her words stringing together like one, "I know this defies the gender norms which in turn makes the question I'm about to ask you, cause you to subconsciously question your masculinity and the fragile lines between being pro feminism enough for Tumblr yet stereotypically testosterone filled to have pubescent girls swooning over you, but...."
"Wait, what?" I interrupted.
Letting out a small groan, Katy started again, this time slower, "I have a question Calum, a seemingly weird question, but it's really not that weird when you think about it, because honestly what qualifies something as weird? And I think anything that strays from the average, and well, I'm not average, and you're not average, and I don't think as a unit we're very average, which would make us weird, and so I don't think what I'm about to ask you is too weird."
"Katy," I said slowly, "What are you trying to ask, you're freaking me out."
"A date." She blurted out in response, "I want to go on a date, do you want to go on a date?"
Stunned that I was being asked on a date and not doing the asking I hesitated a moment before nodding, then realizing that she couldn't see me, speaking, "I'd like to go on a date."
"Okay." She breathed, "Good, thank you, bye."
And then she hung up, thoroughly confused, I stared at my phones for several seconds before standing up and turning the shower back on.
Folding my towel once again and placing it on the toilet I was about to climb in when my phone began to ring again.
Seeing Katy's name I answered.
"Tonight." Katy blurted out, "You can pick me up, because I can't drive and Ubering to a date seems odd. At seven. Okay?"
"Um, yeah, alright." I replied, feeling my cheeks burn with embarrassment and excitement, "I'll see you at seven."
And then she hung up again, leaving me feeling like a girl in a nineties movie, unsure of what to wear.
