I stood frozen on the spot as the footsteps got closer. I was mentally shouting at my feet to start running, walking, anything. But I couldn't.
My breath hitched in my throat as the footsteps stopped right behind me. I screwed up my eyes into little slits and waited, but nothing happened. I slowly opened then one at a time and craned my neck around.
I felt a wave of relief wash through me but I was still on guard.
"Hi" Louis said, his face blank
"Hello" I replied slowly searching his face for some sign of emotion. Nothing.
"What are you doing out alone?" He questioned, knitting his eyebrows together.
"I was just walking home from a party, not that it's any of your business" I said, my tone clipped.
He narrowed his eyes. "You shouldn't be alone at night, it's dangerous"
"I know, any old person could follow you and interrogate you for no reason at all". Jeeze, this guy was so bloody annoying.
"I wasn't following you, I was also walking back. You can walk with me if you like" he offered, his expression softening. He didn't wait for an answer, simply forced his hands into his pockets and marched on ahead.
I had to jog a little to catch up, and caught myself staring up at him more than once.
I may not be his biggest fan, but I have to say, his cheek bones must've been sculpted by gods. I scanned my eyes up, settling on his eyes. They were so dark, almost black. But there was another colour behind it, I just couldn't tell what it was without getting closer, and that wasn't something I was planning on doing.
Louis caught me staring and raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"It's just, uh, your eyes. They're very...unusual"
He nodded, but said nothing else. We stayed in silence all the way back, and even then he only spat out a quick goodbye outside the accommodation building.
I headed up to my room, unlocked the door and stepped in. With one quick motion I flicked the light switch on and fell onto my bed. The mattress was very soft, uncomfortable at first, but I'd been sleeping on it for so long I'd gotten used to it.
I kicked off my shoes and shimmied my way out of the dress before pulling on an old t-shirt and my favourite blue joggers. I switched my main source of light from the main bulb to my bedside lamp. I crawled under the covers and leaned down to my drawers, then pulling out my current reading material; The Host. It was a great book and one that I'd read several times. I won't spoil it for you but basically most humans brains are taken over by tiny aliens and this one girl starts resisting which leads to a lot of drama.I grabbed my thin framed reading glasses any turned to chapter 15, the last point I had read up to.
After a while I heard Izzy down the hall humming to herself. She reached the door, fiddled with the handle, then casually walked in.
"You didn't have to wait up" she said, smiling down at me.
"That's ok, I was only reading anyway" I replied, folding over the page corner and placing it down in my lap.
"How long have you been here?"
"I don't know actually, an hour, hour and a half maybe?"
"Did you walk home by yourself?"
"Not exactly, no"
"Who did you walk with?" she asked. I knew what her reaction would be like if I told her, completely dramatic and over the top. I decided it was better to turn the attention on her.
"Doesn't matter. How did it go with those guys?" I questioned, narrowly dodging her question.
She didn't pick up on my plan. Phew. "Idiots most of them, one or two nice ones though. Emi managed to get one of their numbers" she told me, sounding proud of our mostly shy friend.
I laughed whilst Izzy excused herself to get ready for bed in the bathroom. She returned just a few minutes later wearing a Green Day top and blue and white pinstriped pyjama bottoms. She rolled into the bed next to mine and laid on her left side, facing me.
"Night Soph" she said with a yawn, then peacefully closed her eyes.
"Goodnight" I pointlessly replied, then switched my lamp off and joined my friend in slumber.
