Magic Portal

“Hurry!” a dark figure hissed. Another figure struggled against the foliage and managed to catch up. Silently, the two of them proceeded towards their destination; each time, one would look back to check that no one was following them. Finally, they stopped at the bottom of a huge tree trunk. Soft murmurs were heard as the trunk groaned as it widened its middle to reveal wooden stairs going down. Casting a final look back, they went down the stairs as the trunk closed.

The two hooded figures continued their way towards a passageway until they entered a room. A light shimmered at times in the middle of the room. Approaching it carefully, still wary despite that no one had followed them into the secret chamber, they were amazed at the shimmering light, it was showing them parts of another world, a world that they didn’t belong to. A world that they now had to embrace. Without another word, they held hands and walked towards the portal. Before they could step in, someone shouted, “Wait!”

Startled by the newcomer, they drew out their swords and relaxed when they saw that it was their friend. The only friend they could trust now. “Basil, you should not be here,” the man took off his hood and stepped forward to hug his friend.

“I have to. Please, be safe,” Basil pleaded.

With tears in his eyes, his friend patted him on the back, “We will. Send our love to Rasia. I hope we will see each other soon.”

“We have to go,” this time, the other figure removed the hood to reveal herself.

Basil turned to her, “Lecea, please take care of yourself,” he looked fondly at her bulging stomach. “Elgin, look after her. Be safe.” The three of them gave one final hug before Elgin and Lecea stood together in front of the portal, their salvation. Waving goodbye, they stepped through the light; their outlines wavered before disappearing from their world into another where Earth existed.

Elgin and Lecea stepped out into the forest. Hesitantly, they stopped just a short distance from the portal. Elgin murmured something and it rippled before disappearing, the last traces of their world, Agron, vanishing till the last sliver of light merged with the current world.

Gripping each other’s hands tightly, they started to walk towards the east. Soon, they reached a pavement, apparently, it was not a forest, it was part of a park that they had stepped out from. The portal would be closed until they needed to return. Strolling down the path, they admired the street lights. Smiling at each other, they turned towards the trees where they hid the portal for one last time. Their new lives were on Earth now, Agron would have to wait. They had to bide their time. Until their child was born, they had to keep their child safe.
