Chapter 2
I pushed open my front door, letting the smell of roast chicken engulf me as I entered the house. "Mom, I'm home!" I shouted into the house. I strolled into the living room, tossing my backpack across the room onto the couch in the process.
"I'm in the kitchen!" I heard my mom yell. I wandered through the house until I finally entered the kitchen where my Mom was busy cooking. "Hey, honey!" She smiled, running towards me and wrapping her arms around me. I did the same, returning her embrace. She pulled away, looking at me with an amiable expression. "How was your first day back?"
"It was alright, I guess," I responded, shrugging.
"Oh, well, that's good! I made us chicken for dinner. It should be ready by five!" My mom gleamed. I pulled out my phone from my back pocket, reading the screen. 3:30. I also noticed I had two new texts. One was from Robert and the other was from Alex. I smiled, quickly reading the one from Robert.
To: Ali
From: Robert
Hey, you still wanna talk? I'll come over and we can walk to the park.
My lips curled into an automatic smile.
To: Robert
From: Ali
Yeah, sure. Come over in 10. :)
My fingers quickly darted against my touch screen as I went to read Alex's text.
To: Ali
From: Alex
I'm taking you to the movies tonight at 7. <3
To: Alex
From: Ali
I'll be ready. <3
"Mom, I'm going to hang out with Robert. I'll be home for dinner, alright?" I said, looking at Mom for a sign of approval. She nodded slight, focusing heavily on her cooking. I rotated on my heels and headed upstairs. I entered my room, being greeted by the bright colors that I used to paint it.
I ran towards my mirror to briefly check myself. My hair was still pin-straight and my makeup had stayed in tact. I huffed before hearing the doorbell ring from downstairs. Perfect timing, Rob. "Ali, Robert's here!" My Mom shouted.
I headed for the stairs as I sprinted down them. Why was I in such a hurry? I was honestly excited to be with Robert again. I arrived at the front door where my mother and Robert were talking casually. Robert looked at me and his eyes gleamed and he smiled. "Well, you two have fun," My mother cooed. I shot her a discrete glare before turning to Robert and heading out the door.
"So how's everything going?" Robert asked, digging his hands into his jean pockets. I looked him up and down out of the corner of my eye.
"I mean, it's pretty good. My mom as been a lot more attentive of me since the divorce. It feels nice having your parents care for you," I told him, shrugging. He nodded. "So how's everything going with you?"
"Pretty good, I guess. I miss you," He muttered, flashing me a loving smile.
I giggled, "I miss you too. Look, I'm sorry about everything that happened. I just wanna start fresh, you know?"
"Yeah, I get what you're saying and I wanna start fresh too." He stopped in his tracks and opened his arms. "Friends?" I chuckled and jumping into his arms. He held onto my waist tightly. I breathed heavily, taking in his familiar and perfect scent. The cold breeze hit my bare arms, causing goosebumps to run across them. "You cold?" Robert asked, looking at me with concern in his eyes. I nodded a bit. He reached for the hem of his pull-over sweatshirt and began pulling it up.
"No, Robert, it's okay. You don't have to-" I started but yet, he continued taking it off and shoved his sweatshirt in my direction. "Thanks," I mumbled and took it from his hands. I slipped it over my head and cuddled it close to my body.
"You look cute in my clothes," He laughed, looking at me from the corner of his eye. I looked down at my feet as we continued walking to our destination.
"Oh, shut it," I giggled, hiding my red cheeks. He laughed and shoved my shoulder playfully. Finally, we arrived at the park. We headed over to the playground and my eyes immediately caught sight of a huge slide. "I wanna ride on that!" I smiled, pointing at it.
Robert laughed, "Are you five years old?"
"Oh, please! It'll be fun!" I exclaimed, running towards the slide. Robert jogged closely behind me, his flawless laugh ringing in my ears. I climbed up the ladder, and sat down, ready to go. "I'm coming down!" I shouted.
"I'll catch you!" Robert yelled as he crouched down at the bottom, holding his hands out. I laughed and used my hands to propel myself down the slide. When I reached my hands, both my legs went on either side of Robert and my arms wrapped around his neck.
My forehead landed against his and I laughed. "That was fun," I whispered. He laughed and his breath hit my lips, sending a rush through my body.
"Let's talk," He said, getting up from his position and holding his hand out in my direction. I grabbed it, letting him pull me up off the slide. He led me to a wooden bench and we both sat down.
"What do you want to talk about?" I asked.
"Everything," He responded, "Let's start with the party." As he said that, my mind began flashing blurry images of the party, causing me to shiver. "I'm sorry about what I said."
"And I'm sorry about what I did. I was just dumb enough to get caught up in what Tucker was saying to me. I really did love our relationship," I mumbled, looking down at my fingers.
"I did too," He began, "You have no idea how much it hurt to hear that coming from Tucker's mouth. It hurt knowing that some jackass was playing you and you were believing it. It hurt knowing you had feelings for another guy. It hurt that someone else got to call you theirs other than myself. I was just hurt and you know, when you're hurt, you say things you don't mean."
I looked at him and watched as his dark brown eyes changed to a lighter shade as he talked. "Your eyes change color," I cooed, keeping my gaze locked in them.
"Ali, that's kind of irrelevant to everything I just said," He said.
"I'm sorry but I just noticed that. It's really cool how they do that," I smiled at him.
He scratched the back of his neck, "Uh, thanks."
"No problem." I spoke, "But Robert, thank you. Like I said, I'm sorry for everything I did."
"It's okay. We're cool now, right?"
"Right," I smiled.
"And I kind of want to talk about one more thing," He mumbled. I raised my eye brows, notifying him to go on. "When you tried to kill yourself."
I gulped, "What about it?"
"Why would you try to end your life?" He asked with pure confusion in his voice.
"No one cared about me anymore," I mumbled, feeling my eyes begin to water as if on que.
"I did," He whispered.
"Yeah, well, you had a funny way of showing it," I snapped back at him. He stayed quiet for a few minutes and after awhile, I looked up. His head was down and a lone tear was rolling down his cheek. "Robert, don't cry, please." I reached over, wrapping my arms around him.
"It's my fault," He cried, "I know it is. And it kills me. It tears me apart knowing I caused you to believe that you were less beautiful and perfect than you are. Ali, when I heard, I could barely live with myself."
"Robert, it's not-"
"Don't tell me it's not my fault because even if it's not fully my fault, it's still partially my fault. I couldn't imagine living on this earth knowing you're not here. It doesn't seem right to me."
I laid my head down on his lap. I closed my eyes, listening to his smooth words. It calmed me down. His fingers tangled softly through my hair. "I'm sorry, Ali. I'm so so sorry," He whispered.
I stayed silent, letting a small smile occupy my lips. "I love you, Rob," I mumbled.
"I love you too," He whispered, "Please don't try to leave me again. I'd miss you too much." I giggled. I lifted my head up and smiled at him. "C'mon, let's get you back home."
We both hopped off the bench and began walking in the direction of my house.
