When I woke up the next morning, Rocket was gone. I had fallen asleep against him, but now I was laying across the couch in the waiting room with my hoodie wrapped around me like a blanket, and Rocket’s jacket folded underneath my head acting as a pillow. Rocket must have done this. I decided to forget about him temporarily and go in search of something to eat.
I got my breakfast from the vending machine down the hallway (So nutritious, I know), and returned to the waiting room, which was still completely deserted and silent. It had that really eerie and isolated feeling about it that all hospitals seem to have, and it had been creeping me out ever since we arrived. I wondered what time it was, and, as if the inanimate objects in the room were somehow reading my thoughts, bright red numbers flashed 7:03 on the digital clock built into the TV hanging on the far wall. Then, I wondered how my parents were doing, but unfortunately the furniture did not give me any clue this time. I waited for just over an hour. Rocket did not come back. And I was getting bored. So I decided to call him.
I had his cell phone number saved to my phone, but as far as I knew, he didn’t have mine. I attained his number in case of emergencies, but I knew that his cell was most likely at home, battery-less and dead. He never used it. And just as I had expected, the phone rung, and kept ringing, until I was eventually put through to his machine.
“No luck there”
The only other option, was to get up and go searching for him.
I don’t know what made me think I’d actually be able to find him in such a huge place, with so many corridors that all look exactly the same. It was like one huge maze, just inviting me to get lost so it could swallow me up in the depths of it’s fluorescent lighting and pure white tiled floors. I just walked aimlessly. It was the only thing I could do. He may not even have been inside the hospital anymore. And the more I walked, the theory that I would have been better off waiting in the same place became much more sensible. But at least I was curing my boredom, and getting some exercise, so I carried on walking. And not before long, I was completely, and helplessly lost. I had officially given up all hope of actually finding Rocket here, and walking around a hospital was proving to be much less entertaining than I had anticipated (and I hadn’t anticipated much at all), so I took the most interesting looking route I could find, which was a heavy door at the end of a corridor labelled “Roof”. I don’t think I was even supposed to go through there, but it looked interesting, and I really wasn’t up for obeying the rules. I climbed two flights of clanking metal stairs until I reached a door leading out onto the roof of the hospital. Much to my disappointment, it was raining. I was about to turn around and go back inside, until something stopped me. I saw a figure standing at the edge of the roof, leaning on the wall and looking out over the city. They were standing beneath the pouring rain, getting soaking wet, but totally unmoved by the torrents. The figure seemed all too familiar.
“Rocket!” I shouted as loud as I could over the weather “What the fuck are you doing out here?”
He turned around and beckoned me over to him. Reluctantly, I stepped out under the torrential cascade of water being chucked down from the sky.
“This had better be important” I said once I reached him, already soaked through.
“No” he replied “I just wanted to see you get drenched”
“You bastard!” I playfully punched him in the arm, and something revolutionary happened.
He laughed.
It was only a small chuckle, very quiet and under his breath. But he did laugh. I saw it, despite the rain and fog of the early morning, his smile once again made me feel overwhelmingly happy, despite the fact that my parents were still on my mind. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
