I went back to school the next day, but Rocket decided that he would stay at home, after everything that had happened the day before. He still gave me a ride to school though. And he let me turn the radio on.

As I walked through the school gates, I was immediately swallowed up in a mass hug.

“HERO’S BACK!!!” Shrieked Hunter. I giggled.

“Dude! We missed you!” Sean exclaimed, ruffling my hair.

“Are you feeling better now?” Christa asked. For a moment, I almost forgot that as far as they were aware, the reason I stayed home from school was because I had a cold.

“Much better” I replied with a smile.

Adam didn’t say anything, he just kept poking my face and laughing. I don’t know why he was doing that, but I didn’t ask - it seemed to be keeping him amused. Luke approached us a few minutes later, said hi to everyone else first, then me. When he greeted me, he leaned in to kiss me on the lips, but I turned my head to the side so he only got my cheek.

“Is something wrong?” he asked.

“No” I lied “I just…might still be a little contagious. I don’t want you to catch anything. That’s all” I shrugged.

“Alright then” he eyed me suspiciously.

For the rest of the day, I tried my hardest to avoid all contact with Luke. I had realised that my feelings for him weren’t as strong as I thought they had been. I had been stupid and shallow, and had just fallen for him because of his good looks; but now I was starting to realise that I didn’t really like him that much as a person. The thing that annoyed me the most, was that he was constantly with other girls. Now, I’m not normally the jealous type, but this was beyond ridiculous. Something had to be done, but I felt like confronting him about it would get me nowhere. He’d just do what any other boy on the planet would do - deny what I’m saying and tell me I’m the only one for him…which is all well and good if you’re in a cheesy romance movie, but in real life, being with Luke just didn’t feel…right. He was a nice guy, no doubt, but he wasn’t special. There wasn’t much of a connection. And the amount of girls he talked to was making me kind of uneasy. Which is why, after much consideration, I decided that I was going to end it between us.

My plan was to do it at first break. I would meet up with everyone in the un-used activity room, and then ask Luke if I could speak to him outside. I would just tell him straight off. No bullshit. No “It’s not you, it’s me”. I’d just tell him. My only worry was that there was a possibility it could mess up my friendship with Christa, Sean, Adam and Hunter, seeing as they were Luke’s band members after all, and would most likely side with him, should things turn ugly. But it was a risk I was willing to take.

My plan had seemed a lot better when I was thinking it through that morning, but when it actually got to first break, I was getting pretty nervous. What if this all went wrong and I ended up with no friends whatsoever?

Luckily for me, Luke didn’t even turn up at break. Apparently he had told Adam beforehand that he had an “extra assignment” to complete in Science. I wrote “extra assignment” in inverted commas, as that was the gesture Adam made with his hands as he said it, hinting that Luke really wasn’t completing an “extra assignment”, but was actually somewhere else. The exact location of “somewhere else” was unknown to me at that point. I felt a little left out, as everyone else in the group seemed to know something that I didn’t. But everything was made perfectly clear to me later that day.

Christa approached me at lunchtime and asked to speak with me outside, something I would have asked Luke, had he been there at break.

“Hero, the guys and I have been talking, and we think you deserve to know” she said darkly.
